Engine Cleaning

I couldn't find an appropriate forum for this question, so I'll ask it here.

What do you guys use to clean your motor? Is it safe to squirt it with water while it's running? Are there certain components that I need to cover up while doing this?

I use Simple Green and hot water from the hose. Never had a problem. Then I go over everything w/ some tire shine on a rag to make it all look nice (but the dust sticks bad). Do it every other time I wash the truck.

You want it warm not hot, soak it down with ,GUNK citrus cleaner, not the foam, then pressure wash, you want to check, it over and really look to be sure you get at every area with the cleaner, and the pressure washer, removing the inner fenders, skid plates. Pressure wash, from the bottom up, then from the top down, to finish. Spend a little time doing the preliminary checks and preparations and it will come out fine there is nothing that has to be covered it will not hurt your alternator. I have washed thousands and never had one fail. After you get the motor clean, pressure wash with soap into the rad then start it up and rinse threw the rad, straight threw not at an angle you can damage the rad and AC condenser. Rinse the motor and alt off with it running.

You do not want to spray directly at sealed electrical connections, that is why you do the preliminary inspection and you can wash them just do not put full pressure directly at the connection or you will put water inside the seal and the connection will corrode.

I use gunk degreaser.

While the motor is cool and not running spray with water, spray with cleaner let sit, then rinse. I wouldnt spray water on the fuse box or where the engine main wiring harness connects together. Also, use a shower or spray when doing the motor. Dont use "jet" or direct water stream and you should be fine!

I have not used anything but water yet, still clean after 4 years of pressure washing :-) Didn't see the warning label till last week installing my EGT. Opps, guess I've been lucky!
