Mine just got out of the shop yesterday for the same thing, the dealer said 90% of the time it is the intermediate steering shaft. Mine turned out to be the whole steering column. If you have play in the steering wheel like a knock to the left and right I would check into the steering column. What causes this is the bearings go bad in the steering column.

i have never seen a steering wheel without a slight movement to each side. like 1/16". i changed out my int. shaft this weekend and walla no more clunk.

yeah, i had to replace the bearing and full column in mine... had about 3/8 play inside at the firewall and it sound like a clunker...

my wheel itself moves like 1/16" but down where the int. shaft connects it doesn't move at all.
