sound from column

steering column makes slight clunking noise when hitting bumps. i did a vin check and saw my steering shaft was replaced in 06. could it be bad again? how do you know? i am gonna pull the dash apart this weekend to check any loose parts that may be inside the column. any ideas?

check out rockauto.com for the latest... I think it's like $57, and a pretty easy install.

Or, if you're balls out... you can look at the column offered by Borgeson.

Mine was doing the same thing. I went to my local dealership and they took my old one out and installed the new style one in in less than 20 min. Cost me $97. Solved the problem,no more clunking noise.

My 04 2500HD makes the same clunking noise as did my last 04 4.8L

Is this the shaft replacements from rockauto you're talking about?

I'm very mechanical, do I need any special tools?

Indetrucks,

Bingo... They've revised the yolks on the end to allow less play. I'm pretty positive this would be the same shaft you would get from the dealer if you went in to have them do it. There really isnt that much to the install. Here is a link for some pointers:

They're obviously using a borgeson on the link.. but install will be the same with either shaft.

Enjoy your new lack of clunk!

Wow, thank you so much for that link!
I ordered the part today and should be here shortly.

I had the dealer replace the one on my 4.8L which was REALLY loud in comparison to my HD. But I'm anal about noises so its got to go!

Yea.. I'm the guy that puts pieces of folded up paper in air vents if they creak... I can't stand paying so much damn money for creaks and clunks and ticks... but I guess it's inevitable.

Enjoy!
