Newbie going BACK to Chevy in Colorado

Folks,
Good morning to you all and thank you for letting me join your forum! Well after trying my first diesel in the Dodge 5.9 world, ( I think we bought a lemon... grrrrr...), I am going BACK to a Chevy once my Dodge gets fixed!! LONG story on why I went in the Dodge direction...

Anyways, I have a pantload of questions regarding the 2005 Duramax. I found two of them with LOW miles and wanted your thoughts on the quality of that particular year. We pull a 32 foot camper and gas engines just don't stand up to the pulling needed over our mountains. I also will be asking about the FREQUENCY of changing out the fuel filters and the possible installation of water separators...

Either way, thanks again for having me and feel free to poke fun at the Dodge diesel owner, soon to be duramax owner... yes yes I have seen the light after being burned... take care all and look forward to the comments and teasing... hahahah

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of problems did you have with your 5.9? A lot of guys on here might give you a hard time about it, and just ignore the tow mirror remarks.. Lol personally I love the Cummins, but the body around it is terrible.... This is a great forum with good guys and lots of useful information.. Welcome

If your buying an LLY for towing I'd highly recommend a turbo horn replacement and intake. If you wanna go a little further get efi live from atp trucks and wait for the giggles.

Morning again!!

Thanks for the replies!! As far as problems... bought in 09, it is an 07, rebuilt tranny, battery temp sensor replaced, the relay to tell the alternator when heating the heater grid went out, bought with 75K miles, at 99K, computer and injectors went out, (8500 dollar job, thank goodness under warranty...), put new fuel filter in it after injectors, now they all went out again, NOT under warranty, time to go to the Duramax direction... (loved getting almost 22 mpg on highway empty...). As far as the Cummins itself, I think it is a great motor but as you said, the truck can pretty much fall apart around it...

In all honesty, I have NO idea if it an LLY or an LLE, (I think that is the other acronym...)... I will probably have to look at another thread to see those definitions... One particular truck I am looking at only has 58K miles on it, yeah I would have to buy an extended warranty, but the wear and tear is not there at 100K plus...

Steve

PS... any thoughts on water separators??

An 05 will be an LLY.. And the other acronym your looking for is LBZ... LLY's can sometimes be prone to head gasket failure, but do not have the common injector issues like the LB7 which is a plus.. Watch your egt's while towing, heat can be means of mass destruction on a Diesel engine.

Absolutely no major problems with my LLY... 255k miles and still going strong.. Like Brennan above the turbo mouthpiece is a must for strong towing although i never had problems pulling backhoes with the stock setup but it definitely makes a difference...

On the fuel side, if you want to keep the factory filter you will be paying $50+ for a filter pretty often... My advice is to buy an airdog or similar fuel system and run the CAT 2 micron absolute filter on it and they only run around $16 and the airdog also has a fuel/water separator

All,

Thanks a ton for the responses and my apologies for my cluelessness on the Duramax' info. One thing I might add too is that our new camper, is very light, it is 4700 dry, and about 5200 wet. Our Dodge pulled it up our main pass here at 65 and we LOVED that. So I will dang sure not be pulling any backhoe's or anything of that kind of weight. I try to be VERY cautious of the temp gauge when hauling. I try to NOT have my foot in it either... no use in causing any extra heat or wear and tear.

ALSO, there is a possibility we MIGHT MIGHT MIGHT get a 2013, Extended cab, WT, which is the work truck model. Any thoughts on these NEW Duramax' ?? Again, thanks in advance on all the info!

With it being that light set the cruise at 75 and go for it... 75mph is in a better power band than 70 so it holds its speed better i think

Thanks guys...

75?? Dang, that is peeling the paint back... I think I would keep it at 65 to keep the stuff in the cabinets in the camper... hahah

What do you all think of the new Duramax, 2012 and 2013?
