My personal experience with the D-max is limited (Other then teardown) but what I saw will never lead me to turn up my tuner. When I was there I worked on and dynoed the graint 6H engine.

What I have seen mostly were broken pistons and bend rods. In some of the engines the piston would be broke in two pieces but still connected to the rod. I saw alot scuffs in all the bores because the tops of the pistons scrapin the sides.

The duramax failure rate is really out standing. For every 1,000,000 units the failure rate was only .5%

welcome to the DF..

just replaced a STOCK LB7 this past week in a customers truck, the engine had a spun bearing and the crank was cracked in 4 places! i have also replaced HG's on one of our LLYs that was pushed to the stock turbo limits for almost 30,000 miles and the pistons and walls all looked in mint condition, now i also agree there is always more to it then meets the eye! what i'm saying is most problems are more user inflicted then tuning inflicted!

what type of problems are you having with your LLY? does it have anything to do with coolant disappearing?

Welcome to DF. Spartan or Wolverine fan? I grew up in Oscoda about 3 hrs from you. Hope you find the information you are looking for? Let me know if I can help.

Take care,

The problems I'm havin are a surge at idle, what appears to be a TCC going in and out at about 60mph but it will only do it when its cold and sometimes at idle it will stumble really bad to the point of billowing smoke.

I totally agree with ya on the user inflicted but I'm still not going to take that chance. My luck I'll bump it and 5 sec later .
