Aloha, from first time truck owner

Hi guys;

Just picked up my Silverado 2500hd yesterday. It's a bit of a change as I've never had a truck before or a diesel and I haven't driven an automatic for years (what the heck do I do with my left foot now?). My husband made me trade in my BMW X5 so we could pull a bigger camper.

So I will probably have lots of questions. Here we go:

Should I get an extended warranty? If so, got any recommendations on who to get it from and what I should expect to pay. If we do get one, I would go with 5-7 year 100,000 mile exclusionary policy. If we drive the way we have in the past we would put on 15,000-20,000 a year. Dealer is selling an easycare total policy for $1706.

Is there a break-in period with these big boys? I'm planning to drive it about 800 miles this weekend, all highway. Should I stay under a certain speed limit?

Any advice or desiel specific things I need to look out for would be great.

Thanks

welcome to the forum..good questions.not sure what to tell you on the warranty thing but for me i didn't do it any any of the trucks that i bought(some call it a gamble but so far so good).
now for the break in thing,IMO i run it just the way i'm gonna run it as long as i have the truck, like if i pull hard with the truck i would strap a trailer to it and hit the road or if you drive it empty then just drive normal and everything will set in..thats my thoughts.
i have a 05 LLY Chevy 1Ton Dually with less then a 1,000 miles it had already made sevaral trips with 15,000-20,000 pounds of hay and now has 110K miles and never had a lick of trouble with it and the only reason it isn't runnin roght now is due to a crash it was in. sorry for the long post

Welcome, As far as the extended warranty I haven't purchased one for any of my trucks, most of the time it costs less to fix it your self rather than paying for the warranty. The only warranty that I have seen that is any good is the GM extended warranty. Also NEVER buy a road hazard plan for your tires. The break in is about five hundred miles no pulling over 2000lbs and speeds over 60mph(thats what I did) Good Luck and Congratulations

New Truck

Yes only break in is 500 miles and that's because of brakes lining not engine or transmission, as for the extended warranty I got the one from GM 100K miles bumper to bumper, years of coverage not an issue in my case because I put a lot of miles on it ( towards 27K a year ) but its definitely worth it IMO, things like a/c compressor, turbo charger , computer and other stuff are not covered beyond the 36K miles as far as I know and they are expensive for sure.
Congrats on your new D-Max

the reason i didn't get the warranty because in the first year i already had 60K miles on my truck so it wouldn't have lasted long so if you don't put very many miles on it mite not be a bad idea to get it.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I had to go out and put about 100 miles on it to sort of practice up for tomorrow's trip. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

Hmmm still not sure on what to do on the extended warranty. I feel like I'm in vegas rolling the dice. Didn't get one for the Beemer and nothing went wrong in the first 100,000 miles. After that though it seemed like it was costing me $1000 every other month.

This truck drives really, really nice. Obviously I'm still in the honeymoon stage. Hope it lasts as long as my real one.

One more question. How hard is it to find ulsd? I stopped for gas at a QT station today and they didn't have any. Will I wreck my truck if I use the lsd fuel instead?

I am guessing your truck is an 08 so yes you are probably risking it putting in LSD. You might be able to get by on a tank or two, but I would defintely try to find ULSD. BTW welcome to the forum!

I never buy the extended warranty on anything. But It really depends on how long you think you will keep the truck. It may pay off If you intend to keep it a long time.Myself I trade to often .I just get they itch to drive something different after a few years. As far as break I've always heard to drive it the way you're gonna drive it.

Extended Warranty

Welcome to the site. As far as your question about the extended warranty. The one thing that I like to say is that they don't offer those things to lose money. It is a money maker for the seller who ever it is. I had a friend that worked in a dealership in the finance dept. and she told me that they made more money selling the extended warranties and life insurance than they did on the vehicles. That is not to say you could be the one that it works in favor of but chances are that they are going to come out ahead. Sorry to be so long winded but that's my opinion.
