New Owner

Greetings. I bought a Silverado 2500hd with the LBZ and Allison 6sp this past summer. I absolutely love it.
I have been searching this forum this morning and have found many answers to some of my questions. So thanks to all who are sharing their knowledge.

It appears that I am going to need to run a fuel additive in the winter time and from what I can tell, Stanadyne is the preferred additive from this forum. I have had 2 occurrences where I believe my fuel filter has gelled. Both happened when it was really cold out. The most recent one was around 3 degrees outside. Correct me if I'm wrong, but once the filter is gelled it's shot? I parked it in my heated garage for the night and the CEL stayed on after starting it the next day. Is there a way to reset the light without a tool or will the light turn off after I replace the filter? I definitely don't want to take it to the dealer like last time. I replaced the filter myself this summer when the DIC showed the filter life was down to 10%. The first time I thought it gelled it was at 55%. The dealer said the code was for a low fuel rail pressure and that my filter was probably clogged. They changed it and reset the code and sent me on my way.
My last question is what can I do to prevent gelling other than using an additive? Does using a grill cover work?
Thanks a bunch.
John

On my truck I don't have to reset after a fuel filter change. The only way I could think of reseting the CEL is to un hook batteries terrminals, if you don't want to use a scan tool. I don't think it will hurt any thing its just like changeing the batteries. It worked for me. I think the grill cover just helps the truck warm up faster and keep heat.

My light will go out after a few key cycles. As far as the filter i would change it if you think it gelled it will still have some gunk in it even after warming it up again.

Thanks everyone! I picked up a new filter today and will put it on tonight or tomorrow. I think I'll start getting fuel at a different place too. I've been getting it at a truck stop off I-57 South of Champaign, IL but I don't think they get a lot of business, so maybe it's not the greatest stuff. There is an FS in town that I'll try next.
This is a really cool site. I can't believe all the info that is available here.
Thanks again,
John

In most cases your light will go off on its own after the problem is fixed and a certain number of starts and shutdowns with no recurrence of the problem.
