Newbie with ?'s

Hey all, Have an 05 DMax Crew cab shortbox, all stock (for the present anyway) except for K/N cold air kit on it and 46,000 miles. Checking on a couple of things. 1st, anyone had any mild "out of the ordinary" smoke issues? Along with this smoke a NASTY smell (unsure how to describe, have never smelled it being along side any other DMax's- even while driving right beside them in city driving)? Did this before the Filter kit as well. I had an '03 and it never did either of these things (just the usual diesel mild smoking when cold, etc.). Before I do any mods would like to get this taken care of so I know where I am starting at. 2nd, is there any programmers that anyone knows of to stay AWAY from? Am looking into PPE at the present. Thanks.

I havent had any smoke problems but my buddy did when his injectors started going bad. He had an 04 though and they had injector issues. PPE seems to be a favorite around here along with EFI Live. I've heard the Edge systems have some problems holding up under the hood do to the LLY's hot under hood environment. It seems some of the LLY's have a runaway overheat issue under harsh towing conditions. Just what I've read. I havent experienced this problem myself.

PPE is a great tunner. Diablo sport preditor is the best bang for the buck though. I don't know about you smoke problem. What color is it?

programmers=PPE,ATS,Dialbo,Quadzilla or the ultimate EFILive but it requires some experience..also you should do gauges and an exhaust..i hate to say it but for your turbos safety get rid of the K&N filter, the K&N filters allow alot of air thru but they also allow dirt thru and dirt inside your turbo is asking for serious problems.

before i forget welcome to the forum.

Smoke color is maybe an off white to gray, no where near black. I guess my main concern is the smell associated with it, still have no way to describe it and have never smelled it before (feel kind of stupid walking around in parking lots sniffing hard when I see a DMax start up just to see if anyone else's has this odor).

If it is just smoking right at start up i wouldn't worry about it, but if it continues to smoke after the engine warms and it is idleing i would look into it more.

Is water possibly getting into the exhaust. I saw somewhere a post about an EGR cooler leaking into the exhaust. Check your fluid levels.

Click the search button at the top of the page
and search for missing coolant. Read that thread. The only thing I can think of that would smell out the exhaust other than normal diesel smell is if your getting antifreeze into the exhaust some how. Also that would cause white smoke.
