| Hi Guys I am a new Duramax owner, with no previous diesel experience who will need some of your expertise. I had previously been pulling a 33 foot Wilderness 5th wheel with a Silverado 6.0L V8 for about 7 years. Recently upgraded to a 38 foot Montana 5th wheel and started pulling with my 2008 Silverado Duramax.
I look forward to participating in the forum. Any suggestions for getting started? I already have some questions about fan operation and noise. I'd like to learn when I should expect the fan to kick in. I have had mine kick in upon startup when the engine is cold, and while towing with the temp at 210 degrees (which is what I have been normally seeing while running). In one case with the engine cold and in the other case running at normal temp I wonder why its kicking in?
Any help would be appreciated. |

| Welcome to the DF.... The Fan running when cold at start up is from when its shut down its hot enough for the fluid in the clutch to engage it with out it running. When it cools it traps the fluid in the clutch and thats what causes it to be engaged when its started. It dose not hurt anything its just a pain to listen to until it disengages.

So far we like it a lot. We have only taken it out twice since we got it but have had no problems. Its big but it has great storage and a lot of room when the slides are out. We go down south to Texas in the winter for 3 months and it will be great to have all that room. We have some friends that have had an earlier Montana model 3400RL that we have for a couple of years, and they love it too. The Duramax seems to pull it ok. We took it to Branson and made it through all those Ozark mountains. Don't know if you have ever been there but they are some hills.

It seems like I can run and the normal temp showing is 210 and the fan will not come on. Then later with the temp still showing 210 it comes on. I can't figure what is triggering the turn on if its not temp. I was wondering if the fan coming on might be tied in to rpm.

| The heat in the engine comp. can be enough for it to turn on even though the engine temp is at normal op. temp.
