I just bought a Dmax crew cab 2004.5 LLY a few weeks ago and have learned more than I thought I would ever know from this forum. Thanks to all. I wish I had known about the LLY cooling issues before I bought one but it seems that there are a few ways to improve the problem. I just wish It could be takin care of without a lot of money. Oh well such is life. I am going to try some of the fixes listed here and some of the mods too. Mine is pretty much a stocker at this point. I did change the fuel filter and oil after it wouldn't start the third day I had it. You should have seen the dirt in that fuel filter. It was COMPLETELY clogged. It was so bad my finger broke through the bottom of the filter when I was taking it off. It runs great now though except I have the fan running while towing issue and LOUD! I tow a 28 foot travel trailer (prolly 7000lbs or so) in South Carolina so it's hot and humid. Anyway, thanks for the great forum.

welcome to the Forum...the heating issue on the LLY isn't a wide spread problem only here and there that they have problems with them,in my family we have 2 LLY's and never have had any problems with overheating except for when trying to run a 500+HP tune grossed out at 25,000LBs..

2001-2004=LB7,was the 1ST Duramax GM brought out in 2001 with a Fixed Vane Turbo
2004.5-2005=LLY,came out with a Varable Vane Turbo along with some other upgrades but the one upgrade wasn't realy an upgrade since it causes overheating in some LLYs but not all, also the power was increased in the LLY..
2006-2007=LBZ,the LBZ comes with a 6SP Allison tranny and some more HP along with the overheating issue fixed
2007.5-and newer=LMM,perty much the same as the LBZ except they have all the new Emission stuff on it along with some more power.

Brain, A couple free things you can do to your LLY: Mod the turbo mouthpiece... the plastic piece that attaches to the turbo inlet. Grind down and round the inside corner. (See killerbee's writeup's for pics) Also look up "hook 'em horns" he cut a hole in his stock intake box to let cool air in, rather than hot air from the engine compartment. He said it made a HUGE difference in fan activity.
thanks guys, now i'll have a clue of what your saying

Welcome, I'm pretty new here too. I also have a LLY with no cooling issues and I pull a 30' fifth wheel camper around a few times a month and a 22' boat a couple times a week. I did go with a new exhaust and cold air intake though.
