I fully intend to own an LBZ or LMM by Christmas. Not all of my intentions pan out though. I almost bought a 2009 ECLB 2WD a couple of days ago but the deal fell through. I hope to use it to tow a light (<4000 lbs.) travel trailer.
I'm interested in a Duramax primarily for economy and durability.
I'm a mechanic of 50+ years and have worked on just about anything that has an engine.
I live about 50 miles west of Boise so it looks like I have a good source of help near by in the form of ATP trucks.
I have recently had some sad experience with Cummins and Powerstroke engines belonging to my customers so I've decided to go with Duramax. I think it is the truck for me until someone decides to put a diesel in a compact pickup and sell it in the US.
In any event I've decided to research the truck before I buy so here I am. I've found a lot of good info here and continue to study up. Thanks for the help so far and I plan to continue to abuse your good graces.
I was aware of that but I can't afford a new truck. I just don't have 25% to throw away when I cross the curb. It would be nice though. Maybe the next truck......
My fantasy truck would be a Duramax chasis with a 1954 "Advance Design" cab and bed. Tilt front end of course. We all have fantasies.
Thank you for the welcome. I'm glad you are all here to guide me into an new world of high powered diesels.
I just found a craig's list listing for an LBZ back home with 63K and <$20,000. I may have to make him an offer when we get back. We are on vacation for the next few days.
Perhaps a bit of forum instruction would be helpful to me right now. On other forums I visit there is a way to edit your posts but I don't see that here. Is that only available to those who have bought the privilege or am I just missing something?
More often than not, when I'm done making a post I reread it and see that it doesn't say what I meant. I often have to go back and correct typos or clear up rambling verbiage.
Hey! Someone has been talking. Under my user id it now says "junior member". I don't deny some deficiency in that area but it isn't a matter I want broadcast to the world.
I have noticed that a lot of posts have attached images but I can never see them. It's not a big deal but it would be nice if I could participate. Does anyone know what the deal might be?
It finally happened. Christmas came and went but better late than never. I bought a 2008 ECLB with 185,000 miles. A little more miles than I really wanted but not used up yet. I go to pick it up 500 miles away on Friday. It is a wreck that I got on an auction. It will need the driver's air bag and a complete front end. It also needs part of the back seat.
From here it looks like the cooling stack was saved but we will see. Supposedly it starts and idles so I'm guessing that at least the cooling stack isn't pushed back into the engine. The only worrisome part is that the driver's door isn't completely closed. If the front of the cab is bent that would require a body shop to pull it out. I hope to avoid body shops as much as I can.
It's red. I wanted white because it is easier to find parts for white ones but my wife wanted just about anything else.
It may be a while before I can afford to start in on it but when I do perhaps I'll start a thread about the rebuild and mods.
I live in a non-tested county so I plan on the full delete and program. Since Idaho Rob is just down the road about 40 miles I'll probably go to him for the tune. Nothing radical. Just a little more zip and max mileage. I also bought a 5th wheel last week and the old gasser got 5-8 mpg on the way home. Hence the desire for an oil burner.
I have really appreciated all of the info I've gathered here. I hope it continues when I run into the actual problems this truck will surely have.
