egr valve replacement

engine light on. Took to local dealer advises I need new egr valve etc. Cost to repair $1100., ouch. Your thoughts? The truck has a 140000 miles with other then the factory recalls has not been in the shop.

Could this have been caused by my performance program from hyper-tech or is this just something that happens.

can shop around but wonder if I'm waisting my time.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Dennis

My buddy with an LBZ had a hypertec on his and it kept throwing codes for egr so he took it off and trucks doesn't throw codes anymore. Maybe its something to do with hypertec. He even replaced the egr valve and with the hypertec on it still threw codes. He blames it on the hypertec.

Thanks for the tips. I should have mentioned I've had the hypertec since it was new in 03, not that it could have caused the problem now.

After checking out the info. on doing it yourself, I think I could accompolish it, seems pretty straight forward an not to complicated for even me.

I'll let you know how I make out.

Part is a little over $200., a lot better then $1100. I hope I don't find out why they charge so much.

We have to pass smog in Ca. now, and if I get rid of it, I may have to replace it any way.

Maybe you can try replacing the egr motor first...a lot cheaper than the valve itself. Maybe take you like 20 mins to replace. I would start off there...that's what I would do

I picked up the egr valve at Car quest for $183.00 less then $240., from another supplier who had to order it, let alone what the dealer would want.

Guys, I'm not cheap and would have paid to have it done but $1100., that's crazy. I know a lot of people can't use a wrench, and if it was more difficult, I would think twice. I just hate to get ripped off.
Let you know how it turns out.

Runs great, just got back from a 3000 mile trip, and averaged 21.5 mpg.

As stated ..i would at least block off the egr.. get a finger stick to bypass the codes. Chances are if you dont block it off.. bypass it.. you may be "there" again.
