You know how in the older chevys you could take the keys out with the truck still running? Well someone asked if you could do it to the new ones...:booboo. Well turns out you can... But turns out it messes up your ignition switch.:rof

So my question is how do you replace the switch once I get a new one? Its a 2002 silverado HD, key will not turn at all.

Thanks

If it wont turn and it's in the off position you have to drill it out i just did one :(
If it is stuck in the start/on position you may have a chance.
You have to pull the trim covers off, push in pin with pic. you will se the small hole in the housing on top. You have to turn it wile your doing it. So you may be in trouble.
Good luck

It is the bar that is dropped down and stuck there. I did one of my bro in law and drilled a 1/16 hole in the housing and took a little pick and pushed the bar in and it turned. Just line up the new ignition with the old one put in gear and turn to start and then push in the release and it will pop out. Then insert the new one.

You take a big chance in messing up the housing beyond use when drilling out the whole cylinder. and you dont want to have to buy a whole housing.

You do have to be carfull. Ill second that
But its the only way i found to do it.

It is a pin but match up where the lock bar will be and then drill a little hole in the housing. It dosent take much to push the bar out of the way and way easier.

Well it was alot easier than I thought. Shook the key enough and and got it to turn over. Push a pin through the hole and the cylinder popped right out. Honestly one of the easiest fixes ive done. Thank the lord for not having to drill. Thanks guys, I wouldn't have known where to start, with ought the DF...:drink

Oh and I forgot... The security light stays on, any idea? I had to use a bypass for the new keys, and oreilys gave me Hummer 2 keys so its kinda cool, lol

Hi i need to change out my cylinder as well and was wondering if you purchased a new lock for the drivers door at same time so you don't have to have two seperate keys for the truck?

No i went to orielys and picked up a cynder from them and they gave me a H2 key wich is pretty cool, but I had to use a bypass, due to the little chip in the original key. The new keys dont match the doors, but I never use them anyways. I have the keyless unlock button. that came with the original key. I have changed the door lock before and its not hard. But imo its a waste of $$$ if you have a remote. Unless your battery dies... lol

Your very welcome.
If ur ignition turns, then its not dificult at all.
If its stuck then you will have drill, and have to ask someone else about that.
All you gotta do is remove the dash trim,(easier that way) remove the upper plastic
on the steering column, turn the key as far as it goes, just before the starting the motor stage, take a nail or somthing skinny and poke through the hole on the top of the cylnder, and pop it out. If you have the new cylnder its easier because you can judge were all componets are. If you really need help i could make a video for you, but imo its not hard for realy anyone to do. Just takes a little figuring out.
Goodluck Sawdust!
