Basically you can mod these trucks into monsters before the reliability starts to truly fall off...

And there is usually some new something coming out to not only keep you busy in the upgrading, but also to continue to make tougher.

Ya I agree..... If you add a small tune and some other small parts it will make the truck run better and give you better mileage. As long as your easy on the truck with a 45hp tune wont hurt the motor or trans at all.

Now if you bump up to a 250 tune you can start counting the days till

45hp tune? That don't sound like much fun. Im hearing a lot of guys running at least 80hp tunes or better and are experiencing no issues? And what do u mean by easy on the truck? Easy like gradual acceleration and backing off once in high gear? Or just plain drive it very conservitavely? Just curious as to what exactly u consider easy on the truck

im not to sure about the V8 diesels but my buddy had a 93 dodge dually on 39's and it had 320,000km and he put a 3200rpm spring in it, prince of darkness injectors and ground the fuel pin and he beat the piss out of that truck and never had one single problem with the motor so if the V8 diesels are as durable as the inline 6 you should not be worried at all.

My definition of easy would be, not trying to show off your truck to everyone by laying tire all the time, fast takeoffs, hitting the throttle to blow smoke, racing, pulling, etc.... I have my Banks set on a higher tune, but the way I drive, the tranny is as smooth as glass, and I don't even notice the extra power unless I get on it. But I DO notice the extra mileage due to the better engine tuning. I think your tranny will fail before anything else.

I agree, those that have problems with the extra power are those who cannot for the most part control their right foot. If you simply drive like you are the one that paid for the truck yourself, then you can be ok with up to say 90 hp. But if you go more than that, you will eventually wear out the tranny, because you will in time start slippin clutches, even if it is a little at a time, it adds up and then BOOM, your done...

Timely Post

I was JUST talking to my wife last night about looking at a mod for fuel economy. And I get on here today and there is this post!

I will be totally honest (at the risk of getting razzed by everyone on here!) but, I am not into draggin my truck against a Vette or blowing smoke seven days a week. (If I was single and still feelin crazy .. maybe...?! LOL) But for the most part I wanted a long lasting, hard working, haulin mother of a truck and you can't beat the DMax and Ally combo for that.. not with anything. It hauls firewood, my camper, my quads, and my family - whatever I want to hook to it, like its not even there! I love it.

That said, I was considering a PPE to gain 2-3mpg on it..from everything I read on here that seems realistic (say so, if I am wrong!) But I don't want to void my warranty (at what I paid for this truck, I want to hold warranty if I can).. and I don't want to kill my truck at 150K miles.

I would appreciate anyone's continued opinion on the warranty issue and reliability... and on the PPE too. Even if you just direct me to another post ... that would be great too.

Thanks!

I have 2 motors sitting in the shop here that proves that mods wear them out quicker. There both mine. However they were both pushin around 700+ for quite some time. The worst part I noticed was the bearing surfaces. It oblonged them. It literaly squished (hammered) the oil film out and stared to wear the brearing surface to an egg shape. Now these are an extreme case. Both lasted around 50K with medium flogging (occasional). However with this recent build (read sig), I'm not sure of the HP yet (it's higher on this one) I did a freeway run at just under 60mph and kept the boost below 2psi (usually 1psi and max of 3psi on the hills), and the truck got near 30mpg. I was amazed! I would call this the advent of the modern supertruck. Never before has a vehicle this size, weight, crapy aerodynamics (barn with wheels), with this kind of power capability been available to us. I wonder what kind of MPG one would get if you ran at 45mph down the road (besides pi*sing other drivers off ).
