I just bought my first diesel, 4x4 truck. Since I bought it used, I am requesting the build from GM so I can see what it came with spec wise. It's a 2007, Crew Cab, Short bed, 4X4 with the LTZ package. They guy who owned it before me also put on a 6" Fabtech lift with 35's. More than what I wanted but when buying used, your selection is a bit more limited.
To the point now. I want to add a programmer because the mileage is terrible. I was told from a Ford friend that he gets great results from SCT as far as mileage. He paid around $1200 for his tuner which is more than what I expected. I do not plan on going Banks with gauges and everything because my current toy hauler is a 21' so it's pretty light. I had a Hypertech in my 2005 gas crew cab and it worked fine. $399 I think. Anyway, suggestions? Pros or Cons?

I would take a shot and say your buddies got a livewire in his truck? great for ford, its on the same level as EFI and custom tunning... but for your truck if your just looking for mileage i think hondarider is right go with the quad stealth 2 i like mine can be picked up around $300
edit: EFI live and SCT are the same concept, EFI live is the primary custom tunning platform for the duramax.... while fords custom tunning is SCT, the quadzilla stealth II is a handheld tuner for about $300 good option if you just want a little extra power and gas mileage
Now my head is really spinning. Is it EFI Live or Quadzilla? I'm on both sites now and will compare spec's and pricing. Thanks for the quick feedback.
yeah hondarider is right

If you are going to add a programmer and not delete the DPF, then do a Banks Six Gun. If you are going to delete the DPF, the Quadzilla, PPE Race or Edge EVO race with a 4" turbo dp back exhaust will be your best bet. We have dozens of options either way you go. Let me know if I can help.

if your friend paid 1200 for an SCT (I have a Ford with a custom tuned Livewire) then i hope he/she has the new wireless programmer? that is extremely high for an SCT.... and I don't know much about the Dmax's just yet but as with my ford and my friends Dmax (In the sig) don't waste your time and money by getting something other than EFIlive from the start. if you aren't interested in getting the absolute most out of your truck and just want the added pep and a lil better mileage then go with the quadzilla....

Alligator mentioned a DPF and I have no idea what that is or whether or not I keep it. Also, there is a Magnaflow Cat Back already installed. The truck still has the MFG. warranty so I want to be a bit careful with respect to modifying too much. I am getting just over 13mpg on the highway at 65mph. Even with the 35" M/T, I would think I can do better. Just looking for a nice blend of performance and mileage w/o breaking the bank. I still have to do the Rhino Liner and a few other things.
If you don't want to void your warranty then you wont put anything on it. If you want more out of it then you have to void your warranty and go all out. Any little programmer you add will void your warranty dealers will check for programmers if it has anything to do with drive train problems thats what I have been told from a few GM techs.
