Well i really have to say, location has everything to do with your mileage. i live in an area that is essentially a valley so which ever direction I travel it is up hill. when I hit the 20k mark on the odom. I seen the MPG go up and I inflated my tires to 70/rear 60/front and I have at last calc seen after I towed a 10k 5er mileage is better. I have an 08 LMM, and I really do not see the big difference between the Cummins my father inlaw has and my GM, he averages the same as me mind you he is always closer to level ground than me.

Don't know why. Towing a 5k flatbed, my Suburban would get right about 12mpg, towing half flat half hills at 60-65mph. This is what I would expect out of a new-ish gas motor. The LLY, towing the exact same load (to the pound), on the same terrain, at the same speed, just did 12.9 this past weekend. This is, to put it bluntly, pathetic.
He gets 19-20 unloaded. I get 16-17. He gets 13-14 towing a 26' enclosed with a pair of Spec Miatas (10k+lbs), I get 10-11 towing the same trailer with one less Miata. I didn't spend $10k to upgrade from the Suburban, just to turn around and spend another $2500 on a programmer, exhaust, intake, blahblahblah just to match the mileage of other trucks on the market.
Maybe I will just sell it. It's a real shame, too, since it's a nice truck, but I bought it to save money, not to spend it.
I too, use to tow with a sub. But I think (just my opinion) you may not be getting alot better gas mileage, BUT you gotta admit, you have so much more pulling power with diesel over gas.
You could probably get two identical trucks one gas and one diesel and get better gas milaege with the gasser towing a load upto a certian weight, then the extra power of a diesel allows you to pull much bigger loads and have power to spare.

Hot-shotter stopped by last night to pick something up. He had an '04 Dodge. Said he was getting 25 (!!!) unloaded, and 13-14 towing the 15,000lb cigarette boat that was behind his truck.
My LBZ intake arrives tomorrow and I'm putting it on right away, since I'm doing about 500 miles this weekend in the truck. If I don't see a 2mpg gain, I'll be selling. I was thinking about it today, since I really love the truck and the tranny, but the motor is such a huge letdown.
Do the modifications...you're gonna waste or lose money doing the whole trade thing. And besides that, do you really want one of those goofy looking Dodges?? Bite your tongue man, thats crazy talk!!

I was at the Dodge dealer tonight...
That guy must live in a different reality than we do.....unless he's had a sh_tload of work done to it...he'd have to have a chevy pulling him to get 25mpg...much less 13-14 towing 15k......LOL

My 2008 is all stock, I pulled a 6700 pound trailer from Calgary to Banff and got about 10.5 mpg at 110 km/hr. That's not drivin it like I stole it either, but I'm not backing up traffic.
I'm pretty happy with that.
Unloaded I drive about 80% highway miles and I'm getting 20-21MPG in the summer. My brother just suggested to try some Husky High test Diesel, he got a better tow milage with his but I wasn't there to witness the increase. And I don't trust anyone's judgement but my own when they state the MPG thier truck gets.
To get the best milage, you need to run the synthetic oils, you needs to check your tire pressure on the truck and trailer and you need to not drive at 80mph.
I haven't hit that magic number for converting to synthetic yet.
he'd have to have a chevy pulling him to get 25mpg...
He is also the second 04-07 5.9 Cummins owner I've spoken to that is reporting mid-20s highway unloaded.

I'm sorry, but that's just awful. I just dragged 10k+ with my roommate's '95 Cummins and got at least 12, doing 65mph the entire time.

If I could get 20 unloaded, I'd do a happy dance. DIC is showing 16.2 for this tank so far, about 80% highway, and my hand-calculated figured come in almost exactly 1mpg below the DIC every tank. I run 74mph unloaded, 64mph towing. Truck tires have around 60psi in them, but I just grabbed a 170psi gauge to re-set them at the recommended 80psi today. Oil is Delo 400LE, which is terrible stuff but I had to get something into it (interval said 0%). Next change will be with Amsoil.
I doubt I'd lose money swapping to a Dodge. I'd probably end up with a lower-mileage truck as well, but then again I'd also end up with a Dodge.

You guys are all funny, I listen to you complain about milage but realize its a 7000lb truck not a smart car come on people I dont care what I have behind me had upto 20000lbs behind me and still holding the speed on the hill just east of golden BC now I dont care to much about fuel milage I care about power, speed and towing ability. I have a 01 jetta TDI now that gets me 70mpg it's chipped and tuned with injectors and still get 55 when playing around on the hiway, I'm not saying to complain but come on you wont keep the speeds with a gas pot engine. And the only reason a dodge can get better fuel milage is because it is normally sitting on the top of the hills waiting for the enginge to stop overheating or hooked up to a tow truck with the odometer turning and the engine off, makes the mpg look real good. I have never seen a dodge get better milage then my dmax and mines stock. Best I seen on a dodge is 8 pulling the same trailer as me and Im getting 12
Anyways just my .02
