Rear axle/tires/wheel ratings questions

Ok, I have just purchased a 38.5 ft 5er, GVWR 13960 and dry wt 10990. Dry pin wt is 1980 per manufacturer. I have a 2007 2500 HD CC Duramax (of course) regular bed truck.

I have taken the truck to the CAT scales and tomorrow will take the whole rig there for the rest of the info. My GVR for truck is 7680 with full fuel, me, 2 gensets, and 20 gal gasoline for the gensets. By my calculation when looking at the GVWR of 9200 I don't have enough payload left for my pin weight.

Now, I have read and read and read and have gotten as many different opinions (based on others' scenerios) as to how to make this work. My tires are rated at 3190 each (not sure but assume "D") and my rear axle at 6900. Some have said let your tires be your limiting factor other have said axle and even others say only go with GVWR.

I just picked up the 5er on Saturday. It tows like a dream, stops, goes up hills, and can't feel a thing when the 18 wheelers blow by. I don't much care about DOT, but I do care about my own safety...

Can you all please weigh in here?

I am prepared to bite the bullet and buy a 3500 DRW especially since I called my dealership and can get a new one ordered with all the options that I have on my current 2500 for $3K less than I paid 2 years ago...

Ok, opinions please! And thanks!!

your 2500 will pull it fine, and brake safely, but, yes, you are over your payload a few hundred pounds. That is no reason to buy a dually. Air bags will help with the squat quite a bit.

IMO, as long as you dont exceed 6380lbs loaded rear axel weight, your fine.
AAM (rear axel) is rated for 10,900 lbs, and your way elow that weight.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Not to sound too dumb, what is AAM? and where did you get 10900 lbs? I have gotten quite a bit of flack from an RV thread I subscribe to over this issue. Don't much care what others think, just want to get down the road to my destination without killin myself.

When you scaled the truck, what were the axle weights?

Rear axle cap 6900 (suspension limit, axle more)

CCSB 4wd GN/Fiver 13,600
CCSB 2wd GN/Fiver 15,200

Why do the trailer MFG/Sales throw the 'Dry Pin Weight' out there to mislead people? The way they're calculating pin weight for this Fiver, it must be a toyhauler? If so, then the pin weight on that trailer when fully loaded to capacity will be 2500 lbs, and if loaded wrong could go up towards 3.2k lbs.

Air Springs and 10-plys. But DRWs will always pull much nicer.

Either way you go, you will NOT be dissatisfied if you choose a dually. I have driven 1 since 91 and towed all over the country...nothing like the added stability of the duals!

AAM is the maker of our axels, American Axel Manfactureres.

the 10,900 lbs I got directly from AAM when I had a 40' 5er that was way to big for my truck.

Ok More info for you guys and of course a couple more questions...

My weights:

GCVWR 22000 actual 20240 (loaded)
Rear axle cap 6900 actual 5440
Tow vehicle GVWR 9200 actual 9740

Now, heres the question. I have BFGoodrich M700 E rated tires and am within the ratings for them. However, if these are 8 ply, I have an appointment for tomorrow am early to get Michelins 10 ply put on...(may be overkill but if I am getting a REALLY better tire I want to do this)...Am I getting a REALLY better tire?

Air bags get installed next wednesday! I feel pretty good about these numbers....

10 is always better than 8.
you 500 lbs over you truck gvwr, but not enough to warrent a dually.

the tires you have are a Bridgestone M700 and they are a LR E 10ply tire,so no worrys! run them until they are gone then replace with whatever you desire!..

with those weight numbers i wouldnt hesiate to hit the open road!
i have grossed out at 32,000LBS with our GMC 2500HD CC SB LBZ Duramax, she handle it quite nicely but not as nice as the dually handles it!
