Trailer Brake Controller & tow ball/hitch

Hello everyone!

I'm in the market for a trailer brake controller and tow ball/hitch for my truck. I don't know what to look for so I'm asking for some basic information to get me started.

I don't own a trailer yet but that will come this spring. I plan to purchase a 20' Travel trailer, and possibly a 20' power boat. Both of which should be less than 7000# each.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks!

Brake Controller
I agree. I've had a few different brands but I liked the Tekonsha the best. The braking seems to be very consistent some of the cheaper ones tend to brake a little different some times to hard some times to soft. My horses tend to not want to get in the trailer after you slam them to the front of it a few times.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Are most of these controllers, plug and play? I mean, do they simply plug into the harness under my dash?

I don't want to do any special wiring work, so I'd like to buy something that installs easily.

Thanks again.

The Prodigy is a Teckonsha and yes it will plug in under the dash. Not exactly sure on the 07 but they probably havent changed anything. Why mess with a good thing ya know. They are really easy to install. Directions are pretty simple. As for a ball and hitch. I'd just go to a local farm supply store they will have anything you need. Just get a ball and hitch rated to handle the weight you intend to pull. Some of the balls are rated really low. For use with small trailers I suppose.

The Prodigy plugs in under dash. You might have to buy the harness (pigtail) with it. Its like 10 to 12 dollars. C world sells them. It was so easy to install it. It works awsome!

Tekonsha's are good, I have one and I like it. You have to look at what your buying though a friend of mine bought a fancy, expensive controller and found out later on after alot of BS, that it wouldn't run electric over hydrolic brakes, now that controller has a fancy place above the bench and he got a tekonsha. You also need to be aware of the number of axles your running some controllers only do 1-2 axles. My tekonsha- voyager handles 1 to 4 axles, is easy to install and use, comes with a video on set up, the harness should be already hooked up under your dash (wrapped up) just plug it in, You'll probably have to buy a fuse and put it in for aux brakes, square type, think about 40-60amps Located in fusebox under the hood.

When buying a draw bar and ball. I would only use a solid draw bar and I would over kill on the ball. I bought the heavest rated I could. You just dont know what you might be hooking up to in the future. Why buy twice
