I have a 06 Duramax 2500 4X4 crew cab. The 5th wheel I want to purchase has a dry weight of 13,500lbs after adding my goods I'm guessing it will be around 15,500. Can this weight be handled to the stock 12,000lb rating if I add a leaf out back and use a Timberin overload. My dad has this set up on his F-250 gas V10 and has been pulling his trailer since 1999. I just dont see why my duramax cant handle this with the suspension upgrades.

In the manual it states that I am good for 22,000 gross.NOW you can get a lot more than that with WD hitches, bags etc. There is no reason at all that a Duramax can't pull that, just ask some of the guys here who tow for a living[not me].I operate equip and am involved in the planning stages of subdivision building, road clearing,so I move some of the smaller[less than 10 ton ] equipment. So I am not constantly on the asphalt makin a living,as most of the work is off roads anyhow.. I just opened the GVRW, GVW, can of worms...

Reason: spellin
Ya It should hold it fine with the upgrade. Personally I wouldnt waste the money on adding a leaf and add air bags. You can add air if your gonna be pulling and deflate them for the stock ride

If thats all you want then get which ever is the cheapest! The Allison will only hold a 90HP gain and thats usually the second tune. Most of the tuners have the same basic tunes for the first two.
If you have a 2007.5+ The only thing you might want to look into is getting a programmer with a DPF delete incase you want to get a exhaust and delete it in the future.

Yamaha, if the weight is looking like it will exceed your max rating, beware. I have a 5th wheel and a cabover, neither of which is close to the posted dry weight. They both weigh more. I had an 01 Dodge which I had done alot of engine improvements on only to discover that Dodge wasn't kidding when they said the tow rating was about 10,400 lbs. I turned the torque converter and input shaft blue by overheating the trans in death Valley (winter) because the trailer weighed sooo much(we were going to be there over new years eve!). The moral of the story is weigh the trailer and dont exceed the max rating! Dodge was kind enough to replace the trans, the truck was promptly traded for the DMax with the proper tow rating.

I guess it depends on who you ask, Yamaha. Some people on this site regularly (in some cases daily) pull well over the rated capacity of the truck. As long as the truck is well maintained and you take the necessary precautions it is probably ok. In Treeman's case an aux. tranny cooler could have possibly saved him a lot of grief. (not tryin to knock you man). You'll just have to make sure things like trailer brakes, truck brakes, fluids etc. are all in good condition, and you should be fine.
In my case... I've pulled ~8-9k lbs of skidsteer and trailer with my '92 1/2 ton chevy. Was for only bout 50 miles, and had awesome trailer brakes, but I woudn't do it again unless I HAD too. You on the other hand should be fine.
Thanks for all the replies. I'v been talking with some guys as chevrolet and they told me since i'm pulling a fifth wheel I just need to not exceed the 22,000 GVR rating that my Dmax has. I'll definatly go to the air bags instead of leafs. These Toy Haulers are alot heavier than the normal fifth wheel. I'm pretty sure the Dmax won't let me down.
