"Range Shift Inhibited?"

Dear readers,
First off, thanks for having me. I am a new to the diesel world and the forum. I am hoping someone will have an answer to what is going on with my 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Durmax truck. When I go to shift into gear (reverse or drive) on the dash a message appears "Range Shift Inhibited," and the truck does not engage into gear. I have to put it back into park and shift into gear again. It then seems to be in like low gear and barely moves. I then put it back into park, wait a few seconds, then shift back into gear and it is fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

probably the NSBU switch, its on the drivers side of the trans. take a look at the connections, migh be loose or have some dirt or moisture.

Welcome to the DF. like delong said it could be the NSBU switch. Have you had any rain in the past couple of days. Sometimes water can get in the switch and mess it up. Also fill out your sig so we know what you have done to your truck

Thanks. I will check this out. Seems to make sense because I went through a field last week and almost got stuck. Came home and washed the truck.

after checking the NSBU switch check the linkage. NSBU connecters are very well sealed form the factory. they have silcone inside the connector. they are very hard to disconnect. you could have bend or kinked shift linkage.

I have replaced the NSBU switch, filled the transmission fluid, and it is still blinking the "Range Shift Inhibited" when I shift into Reverse. When it starts blinking and I shift it to Drive to see if it will kick into gear and it hesitates then you can feel it kick into gear. Any ideas? I think I am going to take it to the dealer.

Talking

Took my truck to the dealership for them to fix. It is supposedly fixed. The problem they say was the ignition switch inside the steering column. They say that the voltage was misfiring or misreading and not sending a good signal for it to enage into gear. I say "supposedly" because I got a call from the dealer that while test driving the technician rear ended someone, in my truck! So, as you may have figured out, I am anxious to get my truck back and make sure it is not doing the same thing. Will keep forum updated. Thanks again for everyones help.
