New allison

Anyone heard about the new allison transmission? The new IVT which is supposed to come out soon. Supposably it will hold up to anything we can give it. Its in the latest issue of Diesel Power magazine

I haven't read the magazine but i did stumble across it online. torotrak does them. sort of like a hydrostatic deal...infinite gear ratios. they use them in some pretty heavy machinery. check out their site if your feelin up to some reading.

I have had an IVT in a 180hp 4wd John Deer tractor (7820). Its basically a hydrostatic. I really didn't like it overall on the farm. We ended up trading pretty quick just because of the transmission. Don't get me wrong it had it's ups and downs, it worked great in the field but not very handy anywhere else. I don't think anyone would like this tranny in a performance truck, it just wouldn't be very fun.
IVT has been around awhile it's nothing new, we bought this tractor in 2003 IIRC.

Thumbs down

I am new here, but not new to transmissions or diesel trucks. I did some research on Torotrak and it looks like they haven't been able to crack the code on getting this IVT concept into any kind of production volumes. I did see that they have made about 2500 transmissions for a lawn tractor application and it is not being well received by customers. I have found horror stories of how the transmission does what it wants, and makes a nasty whine noise that is ear piercing. I found two videos on youtube that show the IVT tractor driving around and all you hear is whine. Plus, you can see the transmission jump when the driver releases the brake.

I sure hope that Allison does their homework with this company before getting too involved with them. This drive system is lightyears away from being reliable and ready to use in a production vehicle. Just my $.02 on the topic.

thats that i was thinking dan.
No converter cool, but then the hard parts need to slip and break, the IVT will not stand up to more tq.
