they may cause longer time to heat up and longer times to cool off, however, if you make it up a hill before it can make it to the previous temp it will run cooler. also more fluid in the pan will be cooler then a little bit in the pan because it sits there more often and the air over the pan from driving will keep it cooler, netting even lower temps before even hitting the hill.
I agree you will see better temps with a deep pan and more fluid. Cant really go wrong with a deep pan IMO.
Subpar you said your oil is 20 degrees cooler than before you put the new pan in, that means it is working. You also mentioned that the oil in the valve body was cooler than the pan. .
valve body fluid is hotter than pan fluid.

I just put the Hughes Supply deep pan on and WOW. I've easily dropped 40 degrees just on highway driving. What prompted this was pulling 8,000 lbs up the grade from Phoenix, AZ to Flagstaff. This is a climb of roughly 5,000 feet with most of the climb in 3 short sections. I had the tranny up to 235 degrees.
I'll be pulling the grade this weekend to see the improvement to the tranny with this upgrade.
The Hughes pan is a +4 pan, aluminum with fins. I'm expecting great results.
A 40 degree temperature drop with a deep pan is not possible. There are some good reasons to add a deep transmission pan to your truck but your transmission fluid temperature is not determined by how much fluid is in your pan.
You do get some steady state cooling benefit from having a deep aluminum pan with fins which hangs down into the under-chassis slip stream, but it will only be in the range of 5 degrees or so while you are rolling.
There is a lot of G2 on this subject here in the forum – use Search.

It is a 40 degree temperature drop from the stock pan. Having read some of the answers on here, maybe I know why. I drive 15 miles one way to work. With the old pan, the trans was probably up to temp already at 160-180 degrees. I haven't been over 140 yet since I put it on, but I haven't really taken it out for a long drive.
Like I said, I'll see how it does pulling the trailer this weekend.

I can't wait to hear your results. Many people say that it won't lower your temps which in everyday driving I have found it won't...................but it will lower the high temp you reach climbing grades towing. I used to hit 240 towing an 11k lb toy box during our hotter months. I drive the same grades 30-40 weekends a year racing motorcycles pulling the same trailer with the same weight in it. I now only get to 205 in most cases and have hit 215 twice this year pushing my truck up the grades because I am behind schedule.
While a deep pan may not "lower" your everyday operating temps it will take longer to get to operating temp which is a benefit to your trans. It will also lower the high temps reached under stress such as towing 5th wheels and trailers and hauling big loads. I have proven this with my truck and lowered my high temps reached by 35* F in most cases. Thats the difference between scorching your fluid or not and if your not using a synthetic TES-295 fluid or clone then your temp that frys your fluid is lower than if you run a TES-295 fluid.
I will be looking for your report on Monday and I have a feeling what it will be.

By the way thanks Dirtbikindad for hooking me up with the mag and filters. I try to look everywhere before I buy and his price was the best. Thanks again.

My deep pan it 20deg cooler hauling 10,000lb then stock. my auto meter gauge is in my trans cooler line not my pan its almost the same as the dic.
in dd mode my gauges hardly ever move and if they do they barely get to 120 but i used to get up to 200+ haulin on the interstate and now it sits right at 180.
