Well I decieded it's time to start saving for a tranny rebuild. Don't really NEED it but I WANT it so that's good enough for me. I'm thinking the transparts stage 4 & percision ML TC. Seem that that is the best bang for the buck.
My question is on the suncoast 5-6 speed conversion kit. First is this worth the money about $1600? Is this something that SHOULD be done when the tranny is torn apart? Or is it something that could be done later fairly inexpensive? Not sure what would be involved with adding this, so not sure if it could wait. Is there a less expensive, quality kit than the suncoast, PPE's is kinda pricey, but I don't want junk.
Not ready to buy anything yet, gonna be 8-10 months till I get the money saved, so I don't need prices yet. When the time comes I will come here first. Have had VERY good luck with the venders here (Jess, Nate thanks)
Any thought or suggestions?????
Thanks

no its really not worth it. You can do it at a later time if you want as the tranny doesnt not need to be torn apart to do it. It's a valve body and TCM. You would have to drive A LOT of miles to have it pay for itself.

i have heard from many that the 5 speed to 6 speed conversion will never pay for itself. i was thinking about doing it myself awhile ago but i was told that and also if you tow alot and use tow/haul mode you will be in 5th gear most of the time anyways. plus on top of that your not going to see much of a difference in fuel economy anyways

I was thinking more along the lines of the engine just not working as hard, therefore longer life, not really the MPG. And yes I tow quite abit with it, so ya, didn't think about the tow/haul thing. Well that's good to know, less to save up = tranny gets done sooner.
Thanks

Yes it is $1600, and unvolves replacing the valvebody and the TCM. The labor is only an hour, so it can be done before, after or when you rebuild the trans. The price will stay about the same. It does come with a TransGo Jr, so that is a few pennys saved!
I had a small increase in MPG, and the lower RPM at highway speed is nice, as it does reduce cabin noise.
Is it worth it-? probably not, but life is short, and if you want it, Go for It.

i would just regear to 3.42...its gonna be cheaper and yield the same effect.
power is not an issue with these trucks specially with a tuner so the 3.73 gearing isnt really needed
Depends on what you are towing. Many have reported towing problems after taller tires effectively raising their gear ratio. But i agree for a small tow and everyday driving.

i have towed loads in excess of what the truck is rated for or legal when i was running 35's never has the slightest problem with power....
i could see if you're running 40's maybe but with 35's i just dont see it....the only thing you need to do is downshift for the big hills

i was wondering about the 5-6 spd also. i would like to regear 2 410 or 456 . i run 35's but dont want to give up to much on the big end. as far as needing to regear it helps put less strain on the trans when running bigger tires.

the strain on the trans between normal and 35 inch tires is nominal....
5-6 speed conversion is pointless for you really you're right where you wanna be now
