If you plan on adding big power or using the truck for competition type use i would stay away from the BD. I have no expereince with them but theres a reason nobody uses them! I would go suncoast if at all possiable next would be ats. It would be a long drive but Crankit up diesel in columbus ohio can do your trans in one dayout and in and back home!

What are your goals with the truck? There are inexpensive options available for the 6 speed.

I do a LOT of towing, some upwards of 27,000lbs gross, mostly in the 20,000lbs gross range. I probably will never put more power to it than what my Edge Juice will give it, but I do want it to hold up well under extreme towing duty. Is the 6 speed you mentioned a manual, or the newer automatic. Another option would be to transplant a manual into the truck. I came from a manual powerstroke and I sorely miss the solid transmission and being able to control my shift points.

Didn't realize you have a 5 speed until now.

Your best bet Will be a Suncoast stage 3. This will handle your needs with flying colors.

If I ever upgraded my tranny, it would probably be ATP or Suncoast. I trust the man above (Idahorob) when it comes to tranny discussions.

What are my options as far as putting a ZF-6 into this truck. Seems it can be a bit difficult to find a crewcab shortbed with a manual in this area. I still prefer to shift my diesels.

Well in 2001 and 02 I had 3 sunoast trannys gone in my Ford.1st one was on a sled pull and then I called them and they said they'll send another one in.When it got in they put it in at the tranny shop and the guy went to test it out.He said the 1st time he got on it,he said it was gone throwing out oil. Then there 3rd tranny came in,on the way home I got on it a few times and well I guess bad luck,it went out again. After that they said they won't wanna do a tranny for me.lol.I probably wasn't even getting over 500 hp back then and still that happened.sorry for going off topic.whoops.
Well guys I also have a 5 speed.I just wanna drive the truck yet put some power from a EFI Live, lft pump, intake, exhaust. What level tranny build up should I look for?As you can see,not a big SUNCOAST FAN.But any personal experience with there kits?

I have heard a lot of ford guys have problems with suncoast trannys. I don't know why that is, but i haven't heard of many people at all with a suncoast kit in the allison have problems. Personally i would suggest a suncoast stage IV kit, but would understand you not wanting to go that route. My second choice would be the ATS stage II kit or fully built stage II.

Still curious if anyone here has any experience with swapping auto to manual. I would like to know what their experience with it was. Was it worth the swap. I never will pull with this truck, but would like to be able to get my RPM's lower on interstate hill driving. It seems that since I cannot control my shift points with the allison, if I hit a grade, the first thing it does is shift out of overdrive and my RPM's are approaching 3,000. I would like to knock it down about 800-1,000. Any way I can do this without going to a manual?

I don't know of a way of doing it with out a straight shift. I also think your egts would go way to high if you lug it up a hill at that low of a rpm.
