Just had GM replace my tranny and I now have alot of slop/play when in reverese up a small incline or the tranny just does not want to hold, when it does catch, I get alot of noise out of it.
My old one never did it, is this something I should live with?
Take it back to GM and have someone ride with you to let them know whats going on. Don't think I would keep driving it like that especially after it was replaced.

Could the play/slop be in the rear end instead of the tranny?

I do not think you would have slippage if it was the rear. It would have the same issues in forward and reverse. I would check the fluid level in the trans and see if it is low. Does the truck act like that in drive?? If it does there may be torque converter issues. I would also take it back to the dealer and tell them there is something wrong. Did they give you a warranty on the new tranny??

what year truck is it?
i find it hard to beleive that it would be the rear end but it is possible,my guess is the tranny is not done right or something to that nature.i would take to another tranny shop and see what they say about it.

I'm no transmission specialist, but the 2nd gear is on the same band as reverse IIRC.If they messed up in the build it will only reflect it in reverse or second gear,if that applies to an Allison trans like some of the older Hydramatics. Not saying it's the smokin gun, but gives you an idea of what I mean.Maybe one of the trans gurus will chime in on adjustment,if there is such on the Allison unit....

They did an adjustment once already on it as I had a hard shift frequently going from second to third and I still get the shift like that.
I've only got play in reverse while going up a small incline, forward is fine.
I'll end up taking it back again, but the problem is finding an incline around the dealership to test it out and make it repeat.
The tranny guy did tell me last time he was going to try to get me a new replacement, but that went nowhere.
