Tranny coolers

Quick question on the tranny coolers these trucks use. Is there a fan assisted cooler on the truck or just a flat cooler up front? If no fan assisted cooler, has anyone installed an after market one under the bed? (or up front somewhere if there is room) Summit has a decent looking one for a couple hundred dollars.

Tried a search but didn't find anything.

Dodge had an option for an under the bed fan assisted cooler on the old first gens and I was wondering if there has ever been anything like this for the Chevy? They worked pretty good on the Dodges cause my 93 has one.

I like to see temps for my old truck in the 150-160 range to allow for some heating up when towing. Can that be achieved with another cooler installed up front on the 05 I just bought?

Thanks in advance!

Just the one in front is all that's on these trucks. The best cooler available for the allison is one that is made by Mike L at inglewood transmission. It is a direct replacement and does better than any of the other after market coolers. Also since you have a 05 look in to modding you turbo mouthpiece and you will see some cooler tranny temps. Do a search on this site for LLY modded turbo mouthpiece and you will get plenty of reading.

Thanks Kyle

Sorry I posted in the wrong forum, think I would know better! LOL

Yes, I've already seen the discussion about cleaning up the inlet tube as well as removing the foil from the inner fender well to allow colder air to the filter. Saw that last night when putting in a new filter.

Looks like there are a few other things that might help, I'll be looking at them to see what I'm going to try.

Tranny temps are largely affected by other shortcomings in the LLY platform. Your truck has issues much more serious than tranny temps over 170F, though I understand being particular. For example, if you saw what engine oil temp is...

These issues get resolved in domino fashion when you fix the instigator of them, the king defect, which trickles down to all other performance paramaeters. When you do this, you get rid of some undesireable behaviors, like the fan, IAT degradation, power loss, etc.

Not trying to disuade you from buying a $500 TOC that tends to one symptom, but for half that you can improve several things at once. Remember that tranny temp regulation is by-and-large controlled in the radiator. Consider, if the CAC is blistering hot, and sits in front of the radiator, what chance does the trans have?

There is also a cooler built into the rad on the 5 speeds. This will make the oil run about the same temp as the engine. Seems a bit warm to me, but my shop says its about normal to tow at 215 deg. Truck isn't slipping much yet, just a bit rough from 4 to 5.

215 degrees?????? I would say you have a problem. even when my allison was stock I never saw over 170 degrees when towing, no matter what I was pulling. Now that it is modified I see 150-160 degrees when towing or not.

That's what I thought too, so I started checking into getting a extra fan cooled cooler to install. Turns out a lot of the ones that are available are not available for the 5/8" tubing found on the allisons. But then my shop talked to their mechanics and they all said that they normally see those temps on allisons because of the cooler in the rad. My truck does run about even with the water temp. Am trying full synthetic oil to see if it will run cooler, but no luck so far.
