clear coat on stock wheels

Can anyone tell me how to get the clear coat off of my stock wheels. Or is it a good idea? My wheels have lead weights on the outside of the wheel, thanks alot Big O tires. The wheels were this way when i bought the truck but it is increasingly annoying me. Should I take the clear coat off or not. It looks like crap all peeling off around the bead. I hate the way it looks but I also don't want to spend hours polishing aluminum. Any suggestions.

Yes but, most wheels they can put the weight's in the inside of the wheel. Either way though I'm not sure your factory wheels have a clear coat!!

I always make sure to tell them no hammer on weights! I did and one time at Les Schwabs, who I use all the time, they still put the hammer ones on so I made 'em rebalance and use the stick on weights on the inside of the wheels.

The stock aluminum wheels do have clear coat on them. Mine is peeling like crazy and I'm just about ready to take it all off and paint them black. Someone on here said that MEK will take it off. Can't remember what MEK stands for but I saw it at lowes for 8 bucks. Will that take it off?

I'd love to but I don't want to put any money in them. If I'm gonna spend any money I'll get after market ones.

Ya they have clear coat on them. Id say your best option is to get them sandblasted or bead blasted. Then have then proffesionally cleared with automotive paint. Not spray bombs.

Also, there is a big difference in ballancing a tire with weights on the inside and outside... Its not just for "looks" If you care about the ride then in and out are better. That balances a wheel for it going side to side. Inside weights fix a wheel or tires thats out of round or egg shaped.

Can anyone give me a guestimate on what blasting and powder coating or clear coating would run. Never priced anything like that before.

Hmmm It depends. It will be hardest to find someone to blast it and really wont cost much to clear them. Powder coating would coat more than clear would. You'd have to just call around and get the best prices! Id call body shops who might sand blast and clear coat!
