I think I'm not as informed as I thought.. After talking to numerous people, some run 285's and bigger, and half get 12-13MPG and some are getting 15-16MPG city. Now I heard if you run big tires, and live in a city setting with big hills, you will get bad mileage....but with bigger tires and running the highway, you can get better mileage than with smaller tires. If I get 285's and change the speedo to my new tires, will it change my gearing and get me better mileage than if I didn't correct the speedo? I'm just confused why some are getting good mileage with bigger tires...

On the hwy you might see a little better mileage, because of the RPM drop. In the city you would see worse mileage because it takes more power to turn the larger tires over.

Man thats a tuff one! I live on the western side of the state and got enough hills! My mileage dropped when I switched from 265's to 285's both on the highway and around town. Seriously about 2 mpg depending on how fast I was going. Right now with the PPE I average 18 on the highway. Around town I can get from 13-14. Better if I baby it.

Theere is a sensor on the trans telling the computer cluster how many revolutions the trans is turning. Then the computer converts the revolutions to the speedo as a ratio to find the speed of the vehicle. When a programer resets the tire size it basically changes the ratio so the cluster is giving the correct mileage.
The gears are mechanical and in the rear end. The programmer cant change the gears or anything.
Ok I just gotta say it.... Get the 285's! If you dont like them sell em. Your like me and wont be happy till you try them! The mileage wont be a killer difference just 1-2 mpg off. Since fuel prices are down your wallet wont notice the difference as mutch! If you want come down here on a sunday. Ill throw my wheels on your truck and we can go for a ride!
Heres the pics that I have. If you want anymore let me know. Some of them are with my old 285's
265 285 The bottom pic is flipped so its from the same angle. Or a right side drive dmax?

Sorry to get off topic, but I have to ask Tow Master where he got the towing mirrors? I'm assuming they're aftermarket since they didn't start putting that style on the Chevy until 2007.5 (to the best of my knowledge).
Modifications by NOR CAL TRUCK: Cognito 4" Suspension Lift, Cognito Heavy Duty Tie Rods, Bilsteins all the way around, Sulastic Rubber Springs, 52 Gallon Titan Tank, Black XD Revolvers 18x9, 325/60/18 Nitto Terra Grapplers, Autometer Pillar with Phantom Boost and Pyro, Transgo Jr. with Mag Htyec deep pan, EGR Block Plate, BD Exhaust Manifold, Air Lift Air Bags with WirelessAIR, and Nicktane Filter Kit
