16" OEM wheel widening?

has anyone done this? I didn't get anything on a search. I have the 17" boulder rims, but they don't look as good as the OEM 16's to me. I'd like to put maybe 285/75/16's on her until warranty is up and then some 33's; 305/70/16 or even a tad larger. I don't want to spoon on anything that large on the 6.5" width.

I started thinking about having the OEM's widened while I run the Boulders for a little while, and then sell the Boulders.

I'm thinking that bringing them to 9" wide would be ideal. Does anyone have the been there done that info on this? Backspacing opinions too?

Thanks!
Wally

Well as is it's not recommended to run anything over 285's. I'd question their integrity after they've been hacked up and put back together though. But thats just me.

And how much does something like that cost? It's got to be as much as another set of wheels!!

dunno if the strength would be compromised with proper tig welding, but it's a point to consider and discuss with the shop.

As for cost, I'm seeing $60-100 each searching online. Once I decide (if I decide), then I'll call a place I've been reading reviews on nearby.

Again, it's just a thought open to be kicked around or kicked in the teeth, lol.

yes, I am. I read the width as too narrow for even a 285 though.

From when I was doing it for another project.. That is WAY low in cost.. After searching alot I found Weldcraft Wheels Wheel Widening Wheel Repairs Wheel Restoration Cost was like 240 a rim if I remember right.. They do great work from the people I talked to.

my mom runs 305's and 315's on her stock wheels. They are on a 2000 half ton though.

anything over the 265-75R16 is recommend to have a wider wheel..
i wouldnt do it for numerous reasons, first you'll never get them to be truely centered and second i dont think they'll be strong enough!

Truth in them not holding up to the pressure... I have seen stock rims split and I could just think how scary that would be driving down the highway. But I'm sure it can be done... Although I don't have the balls to ride with them!

There are over 5 people in my area running those oversized tires on stock rims

37x12.50s on stock 2003 chevy 1500 17inch wheels and GMC 1500 17inch wheels

35x12.50s on stock chevy 2500HD 16inch wheels

Skunk101 on this forum used to run 315s on his stock GMC 2500HD 17inch wheels

My point being that it can be done and if you keep the right air pressure in the tires and keep them rotated they will last the full life of the tire. The whole thing about the stock 16 splitting the tire sounds like an extreme freak accident
