BFG 285/55/20 tires for towing?

Hi I have these tires on a 2005 LLY 2500hd c/c. The wheels are 20x9.5 and rated for 3400lbs. These tires are rated for 2835lbs per tire. I am looking at a 5th with a pin weight of 2300 lbs and a dry weight of 11000 lbs. My question is are these tires adequate or dangerous? Thanks alot.

the stock tires on a Duramax are rated at 3040lbs each so you are loosing a few pounds in load index, also what ply tire are the 285's?

you'll be fine with LR D(8PLY)tires..i have done quite a few tires in my lifetime as shorts as it been and i have never had a problem with running a LR D on a 3/4 ton Diesel.

Awesome thanks for your help! So do you think a 2500hd with my airbags and these tires hitching up to a 2400 pin weight toy hauler is good still? I know I am probably over at the scale by a bit, but I don't want tire failure. Thanks again

What he said. I dropped from load range E to load range D when I got my BFG's, mainly to have a little more compliant tire, as I dont have my truck loaded up all the time. Even when the time does come around that I need to put some weight on it, the tires are more than adequate assuming you check the pressure, and are not running a retarded load on them.

yes you'll be fine with that load....i run a LR D 285-75R16 on my LBZ and had a load behind me that scaled just a tadd over 30,000lbs gross weight and it handled it like a champ..

to give you an idea the back tires are rated for 5070lbs and if you have a 2400lb pin you still have a 2670lbs worth of tire left over..

Thanks, I appreciate it that makes sense. Does the weight of the truck add to that 2400lb pin weight. For example if the rear axle weight is 3000lbs am I 5400lbs on the tires? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just out of my realm on the tire scene.

your truck weighs roughly 7200-7400lbs depending on the package that came with the truck but to be honest i'm not sure how much the backend weighs,i'm sure it doesn't weigh even close to 3,000lbs..
