Super Singles

I’ve been seeing the big rigs running single wheels instead of the duals. I assume it’s for better fuel mileage! I’ve heard that it helps with traction and a smoother ride??? I don’t even know how much they are and if it’s worth the swap? But with fuel prices where they are everything helps. Anyone running them? It will be a few payments down the road before I do anymore to her but I’m already looking.

The majority of people/companies running them are doing it to save weight. Some run tag axles, aluminum hubs, even carbon fiber springs all to get the light weight down. Smaller fuel tanks, fiberglass cabs, smaller engines, you name it they'll shave it. They are really expensive, and if they fail alot of times it will wipe out the wheel also. Personally I think they look really cool but I'd rather not have to deal with them.

I've only seen them on Fuel Tankers and the fleet of a regional food distributor. The biggest thing I've noticed is how quiet they are, no highway 'Sing', in fact no noise at all when passing.

Other than looking cool, Converting a Dually would not be efficient as you would not be able to rotate for wear.

They are designed for saving weight. They were originally developed for the tanker market as they are paid on gallons of product hauled. They are showing up on more applications now. I have run them and they do offer a smoother ride, but they suck in the winter and if one blows, well you can kiss goodbye anything that comes in contact with the flying rubber!!

The big tire company here in our county was trying to get us to swap our coal trucks over. They were saying they were lighter, had less rolling resistance (better mileage), and where cheaper than buying two of the others. But we never would swap, because when your pulling 120,000 pounds out of a pit and one blows you would be stuck, at least when your running duals you can limp it to where your safe to stop.

With all that said i would be interested in one wide tire on the rear of my dually, but i have not been able to find anyone that really knew if they made a E rated tire in a size that would work and what size wheel i would need.

I didn't know I've seen them on trucks and trailers they are on tankers, mail trucks, and some of the freight trucks in the area... SO it's a no go for our trucks. I did see where eagle had some new 19.5's and it looked like single wheels? don't know?

The only thing about going to 19.5s is your going to loose any mileage benifits of loosing a tire. If i do it i want to stick with a 16" wheel to keep the weight down.

that's right. I was thinking about getting 2 sets of wheels and putting street tires on one and drag slicks on the other.

Tire shops hate to see me pull in, they may just refuse service with one huge single. I don't understand their wimpiness, my dually tires are smaller and lighter than the 2500hd's wheels.
