block heater pooched, how do i start in -36

Hello, I have a 2007 Duramax, it seems the block heater is pooched. It's -36c, I pulled the batteries and charged in cabin, glow plug light takes like 45 seconds to turn off, then I try to start, it just turns over. should I try ether? any suggestions, I need it to start today.

Do you think it's the block heater, or the cord to it?

so I did replace the cord..and still no action...my generator doesn't wind up at all when I plugged truck to it. so leads me to believe the heater is the issue..i have a new one..but not looking forward to changing it out in this weather...

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT USE ETHER. The block heater doesn't pull a lot, so it may not trigger a big load on the generator. How long have you cranked it so far? Does it try to fire at all?
