Transmission Fluid Cold Check

I changed the fluid and spin on filter on my 16. I replaced the fluid with what came out, about 7 qts. I did a cold check on the fluid and it was super low, about an inch under the cold marks. I've read about the cold check procedure but had a couple questions. Is it just for initial startup or is there a cold temp range like the 165-200 hot range? Its around 20 deg here so its difficult to get a hot check and the truck wants to go in high idle which may affect it also. Trying not to overfill and have a bigger headache. Thanks for any info.

I don't think I've heard/read of a 'cold check' temperature range.

Just the 'cold check' steps from the Duramax supplement.

(probably why the cold check level is also a band)

I did my 16 a month ago. Noted dipstick before the change. Drained and did the spin on then measured exactly what came out, put exactly that much back in plus about 8 oz for the filter. Came out perfect. It won't hurt to be just a tad low. Run it for a while and check it again.
