Heck, even todayís generators will set a code and flash a set of numbers if it has issues, you should know this.
Todayís vehicles doesnít do that my 86 did, you need devices to try to trouble shoot.

You also might consider laying off the ether on the newer diesels since about 2003, itís not suggested.
Heck, you should know this as well.

How do you figure a 2016 would have a Denso HP pump?

Using ether is like frying bacon while yer naked.

They say you shouldn't, but if you're careful it works.

I've currently got 32,000 on my '16, but im tossing around the idea of trading it in next year before the new HD comes out, and getting an '18 with the LP5. I'm just trying to decide on if I want to stick with the grenade under the hood or trade up to the LP5. A Cp3 swap isn't out of the question either, but I'm hard pressed to put that kind of money into an already expensive truck just to make it more reliable.

Just looking to see who has taken the gamble and beat the house!
So Im in an 18 GMC. Bought new off lot with 9 on odo. Previously sold my 13 2500 LT Duramax.

This is the biggest POS I've seen in awhile and I plan to dump it ASAP. It is absolutely no comparison to my 13 LML in most every department. Briefly:

Shocks gone at 35k
Brakes suck
Dead pedal
Weak battery
Paint chips if you look at it
Tailgate wont open even with key
And the Allison...its failed to unlock at a stop a few times nearly vaulting me in to fixed posts at stores and such. It does ultimately release with a bang. Done this 5 or 6 times since new. Got a few slap shift chirps without asking too.

And the frigging ball joints are banging just like the 13 with 225k. Sure I grease them and it stops for few hundred miles but then its back. All this at 40k miles.

This is a 18 SLT and the 13 was an LT. Both are in oilfield service. The 13 needed 2 sets of batteries and 4 sets of tires, thats it.

This one is headed for Carmax or private sale before she reaches 48k and filed under "lessons learned ".

My experience and my rant...over. ( Still want one ? )

No problem, it’s your motor.
I know your a master mechanic from the late 70’s, I was building race motors in the late 60’s while you was teaching 10 years later.

I’d just soon the cook not frying my bacon while naked, I’m not a fan of pubic hair in my food.

I have no dog in this fight but i will say this. With glow plugs and grid heaters it will ignite with ether before the piston is at tdc. Normal ignition starts when the piston is just before tdc so having it ignite before could bend rods, damage rings and pistons. If you are going to use it, disable the glow plugs.

Look,

I have followed this forum for several years and the body of information here has saved me some misery from time to time. The specifics on given problems have saved a lot of blind troubleshooting.

I joined hoping to maybe give something back to the guys who are generous with their time and knowledge, or maybe help someone who is new to the game.

The only reason I noted my experience at wrenching is that I found this post kinda condescending...

To be honest owning a diesel requires a little more responsibility to know whatís going on compared to just owning a Prius.
Edge Insight ďmonitor onlyĒ would be a good investment that you can even take with you to put in another truck, this way youíd have ideas on whatís happening or whatís not happening.
I'm active on a few other forums and recognize some personality types. While I don't take myself very seriously and try to find humor in most situations, I won't be bullied either. At this point, to save some snarky exchanges, why don't you put me on ignore.

There are a lot of things in this world that "aren't recommended" like using ether. When someone is 90 miles from nowhere and his truck won't start, very carefully using a little squirt is better than a long walk. Instead of giving me grief for using it, finding out HOW I used it would be of more use to the guy sitting in the woods with a dead truck.

Thank You

On my third DMax.

Off topic was attempting to warn him on the dangers using ether on these diesels.
But being a former high school auto teacher in the 70ís, we get a stupid reply about cooking bacon naked, because he thinks he knows it all 50 years after.
Maybe research the subjects before he embarrasses himself again.
Thatís ok, after that that new guy with limited knowledge made my ignore list.
