It's true. I got a call at 06:45 from my dealership earlier this week telling me that I should not use the block heater due to it may cause an engine bay fire. Several months ago I had the original block heater go bad and had replace. It appears mine was the first one to go bad before this recall here where I live. They are trying to solve the problem but do do do not use. GM has instructed service departments to cut cord at block. Now we wait for the repair part. The good news by the time mine was replace the weather changed and I didn't need it. So I'm good. Anyway there's my update. And if you have the Chevrolet app on your phone look at your current recall tab and you'll have what I have as well.
Just bought my ‘19 L5P yesterday. Can confirm the dealer disabled it and it shows a $100 credit on the factory invoice. There was also a letter with the docs that says I will be notified when a fix is available and it can be re-enabled.
They are cutting cord off block heater. I just got letter from GM today it says there’s still no fix yet. I think they will replace cord with new type or replace the whole block heater with redesigned model. I am going to call the number on recall and ask if we are getting 100.00. Like the people are getting now.
I put my 2018 that I bought a year and a half ago for the FIRST service that they would allow, since they would not do it at 2500 miles like they promised when I bought it. I did that first service myself and found 2 bags on the grease fittings never were greased from the factory. I only have 7500 miles on it now. I had some small leaking on the oil pan gasket and found some of the bolts loose so I asked them to re tighten again, no GM made them replace the oil pan?? The drivers window decided to keep going up and down on its own when you put it on auto-up, then the bulletin for the transmission line location inspection needed checked, and today, I got my letter for the heater cord. I guess they will have the truck through next week. Great $69,000 truck. Could have bought a FORD if I really wanted these kind a issues.
Was notified in January not to use the block heater, that it may cause fire. Found out recently if you take your Chevy, GMC, or Ford to a GM shop for service they are required to cut your block heater cord off.
Service manager told me last week that a fix has been found. Those who still have the cord attached will soon get a recall repair notice. Those who have had their cord cut will receive 2 Recall notices.
Mine is still good and I had every intention to use it again this winter but glad they have a new fix. In this area I will need it shortly.
This is good to hear! Would you mind sharing where youre located? Im in the north east, was just at the dealer this past weekend for a service, and inquired about a fix e.g. not cutting the cord, so i can use my block heater this winter - i was told that GM did not have a fix for this yet, so im hoping my dealer just wasnt notified yet.
I called my dealer (TN) last week asking about a fix. They said that GM had not given them a fix yet. Not that I really need mine, but would like to have everything functioning on my truck. Just doesnt feel right paying that much and knowing something doesnt work.
well at least you'll eventually be getting a fix. Us LMM/ early GMT-900 owners had the heated windshield washer fluid thing that GM simply disabled and never came out with a fix or replacement for it so we have a useless button in our cab.
First thing they teach newbie service advisors is how to lie convincingly. Second thing they teach them is to always back up their fellow service advisors when caught with a lie by telling an even bigger lie.
I filed a complaint to the BBB. GM corporate called me today to get some more info...they kept asking me what dealership I was having issues with and what aren’t they repairing. For like the millionth time I informed them it’s not the dealership...it’s the lack of a permanent solution/fix from you guys. We’ll see how it goes from here...the winter up here in the interior of Alaska isn’t going to wait.
I don’t think that will help you get a resolution to the problem. I bet they are diligently working on a solution, but they can’t repair it until they have a proper repair. I’m moving to North Dakota in a month, and my solution is that I ordered a gas burner and the diesel is being traded.
Certain 2017 - 2019 model year Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 vehicles, equipped with the 6.6l Duramax diesel engine (RPO L5P) and optional engine-block heater cord, may have a condition in which the block heater cable function was disabled.
Repair Description:
Dealers will replace the engine block heater and cord.
Was at the dealer for another reason today and saw the above post and walked over to the service guy and gave him the number. Sure enough, finally. Had him print this off. Notice the list of states. Im in Ohio, hopefully it gets replaced before it gets too cold.
BTW. There were pictures too, fortunately they didn't print. It appeared that the cord for the engine block heater was wrapped now in a protective cover, unlike the existing ones.
Going to be awhile before it gets cold enough in Ohio for the block heater. Got to get to 0 or below.
