10 Speed towing

With the 6 speed I would lock out 6th gear while towing. Now with the 10 speed what gears will I need to lock out while towing my 5th wheel at about 14,500 lbs? TIA

The truck when in tow/haul likely knows best , just leave it alone and see.

Had the chance to pull my 5th a couple times before the snow came. Same weight (14,500 lbs) Put the truck in Tow/Haul and let the 10 spd do its thing. Pulled like a dream!

I've pulled ~17k pounds (43' Featherlite triple axle dual car race trailer) several times and I find the truck is happiest in 9th gear at any speed from 60-75 MPH on flat land. It locks the converter, trans temps stay low and the fuel mileage is best. I found that pulling any good grade at those speeds will require 7th gear for the truck to effortlessly pull it. I haven't encountered any steeper grades that require 6th gear or lower unless some jackass pulls out in front of my while climbing and I have to significantly slow down. Most insignificant grades can be pulled in 8th gear.

I was skeptical of the 10 speed after having a couple L5P trucks with the 6 speed Allison. I would not go back to the 6 speed for anything after spending 13k miles in the 2020 truck. The 10 speed does way less goofy stuff, shifts better under normal conditions (especially tipping in the throttle at lower speeds) and doesn't have the flare with harsh shifts the 6 speed did on occasion.

I have noticed that fuel mileage was slightly better with the 6 speed unloaded, but towing MPG is slightly better with the 10 speed.

I have a 9-10k toy hauler and I put it in tow/haul and let it do its thing. Pulled through plenty of 5-6% grades without any issues.

5er weight is 16700#, went 1300mi, all in D, tow haul on.
Really tows better than the 6spd period hands down.

just drive it, let the electronics do their job.
