Thinking about a 1987 1ton 4x4 with a 6.2 and a 4 spd?

Hi guys,

I saw a local ad and was wondering about a 1987 GMC 1 ton 4x4 with an SM 465 and the 6.2l diesel. I know nothing about the 6.2, but I don't want a hard core pulling rig, I was looking to throw a camper in the back and use it for some backroad camping with my sons. Here's the info from the ad:

"1987 chevy silverado k30
sm465 standard trans behind a 6.2l Detroit diesel
10 inch lift on 38.5in swampers
Has a dana 60 king pin in the front and a 14bolt with a locker in the rear with 4:10's
trucks got 240xxkm (150,00 miles)and runs good, fresh oil change rotella shell, fresh transmission oil as well,cd player, gauges work, surprisingly good on fuel with the diesel/standard
wicked mudder truck just bought another truck don't need 2"

Any thing I should look out for when buying a truck like this? Any advice? I thought it was strange to see that there is a Dana 60 front end with a King Pin, I didn't think GMs had king pins in 1987, only Fords. Let me know what you think.

GM kept the kingpin 60 up until 91 in the crew cab 4x4's and I've seen a very small amount of regular cab 88's that were the 73-87 bodystyle yet. 88 was the start of the GMT400 bodystyle so all K30's in 87 will have a KP60. Only thing I'd be leary of is how they did the steering with the lift, if you're wanting reliable and strong steering offroad look into crossover steering and possibly hydro assist. If they kept the factory push-pull type steering I'd change it out soon after buying. To me 10" would be a little top heavy with the camper in the back but its all up to you. The 6.2 will work good for what you're wanting to do with it.

I am looking at a stock 6.2 with a 4 speed in a dump. Anything else to look out for?

X2. The steering box will crack the frame over time, so check the frame where it is bolted. That area will need to be reinforced and aftermarket brackets installed to take all of the force off of that small area.

Engine and transmission not much. Both are pretty reliable if maintained. Body wise, cab cornors, mounts, inner and out rockers. Parts for the square body are still pretty cheap.
