Are you sure it's Diesel oil at that weight and not gasser?

Just askin'....it happens

10w40 Diesel engine oil, it's usually a Europe or Canada thing.
10w40 stocked in the States, it's usually Gas engine oil.

If it is API CJ-4 10w40 (Penn doesn't make a 10w40Diesel oil), it doesn't matter vs 15w40, same lubricity on the hot end.

Diesel Engine Oil ? Pennzoil

I appreciate the heads up and glad I asked! I was in the middle of a bunch of errands and thought I might as well change the oil myself since I'm home for a couple weeks. I did some quick searching on this site and noticed mostly the 15w/40 being mention but also saw 5w/40 a couple times..so I grabbed the oil and took off.
Looks like I'll make a trip back into town tomorrow to return the oil and go by Napa first and if none there then the stealership. Thanks again!

I was at Advanced Auto Parts...and in typical man mode I didn't want to ask for help! The wife and kids were in the truck waiting on me and I was in a rush, plus our power was out at the house due to Tropical storm Hermine and I wasn't thinking straight. I did take the time to look at their book to figure out what filter I needed and it showed the same filter for 1500-3500, so I didn't think there was a difference in motor oil between the gas and diesel motors...figured it was mostly just the fuel like I said sorry for the newb question.
Glad I didn't have time to change it today.

When changing out the tranny fluid, to get the correct volume of 7.4 quarts (about 7L) a mechanic at a local shop suggested I drain the tranny then start up the truck for a max of 10s and let is dump out it's reservoir. Last change I only got about 6L out/in. Thoughts on if this is the proper way to achieve the correct volume of fluid for a drain and fill?

By automatic xfer case I assume you mean the one with the electronic knob or buttons on the dash instead of the lever on the floor?
