Code P0087

I have a headache with this code p0087. I'm traveling cross country from CA to Va. in Tx the error code p0087 put my engine in low power mode. I was able to replace the fuel filter and after ca. 2'000 mil it repeated the same scenario. I replaced the fuel filter again and the engine is working normal. Any idea what going on?

Are you empty, towing, on the flat, running hills? Give us a little info so we can throw out some ideas. Low fuel rail pressure can have many causes.

Yes I'm towing a 40 ft camper ca 15'000 lbs driving average speed about 63 mph in 5th gear. Driving this combination for many all the way to Alaska with no problem?!

What's done to the truck? Could just be bad fuel causing the need for filter changes. It also could be collapsing fuel lines but usually changing a filter wont help that.

What fuel filter are you using?
It could also be injectors returning too much fuel, cp3 dropping rail because of too big of a tune or just weak.

Throwing the code on the hills? Do you have a monitor like an Edge CTS/CTS 2? A monitor will show you the actual versus the desired fuel rail pressure, it will also clear the code. My experience with the P0087 taught me a lot including when it was about to throw the code by watching the pressure, but more of wathching the exhaust. If you watch the exhaust it will start to roll heavy black smoke just prior to throwing the code, sometimes with a lean condition engine shake. Just prior to that if you manually downshift you might have enough RPM's to keep from throwing the code. First thing first, get a monitor! Good luck!

Thanks for all the positive responses, but the question remains why can I drive ca.2'000 miles before the code p0087 comes back? My truck is a 07 2500 with 280'000 miles. Maybe this info could help

An update on my problem with the fuel system p0087 code. I found out my auxiliary tank was empty any time when the error code appeared. The empty auxiliary tank acted like a bad tank cap and massed up the sensor. Filling up the auxiliary tank fixed the problem!
Thanks for all your help
