Condition
Some customers may comment on high oil pressure or that the oil pressure is "pegged" high during the initial start up of the vehicle.

Cause
When first starting the engine with cold oil, the oil pressure can be up to 100 psi or 690 kPa (full range of oil pressure gauge) at idle conditions. This is normal with cold oil and internal relief valves in the engine will be active. As the engine oil temperature rises, the idle oil pressure will reduce.

Correction
This is considered a normal condition and no repairs should be performed.

Parts Information
No parts should be replaced for this condition.

Customer Information
Please communicate to the customer this condition is a normal characteristic of their vehicle. It will not impact the designed performance or reliability of the vehicle. Please share this information with the customer, including a copy of this bulletin.

These DTCs may be the result of loose connections of the charged air cooler ductwork.

Correction

Condition
Some customers may comment on a “Service Emission System” warning in the DIC that occurred once and did not persist beyond one key cycle. The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) would also be illuminated. Upon inspection technicians will find DTCs P1016 and / or P1017 in history.

Cause
This may be the result of the Diesel Exhaust fluid (DEF) emission system detecting an intermittent serial data communication fault between the DEF quality sensor that is internal to the DEF tank and the DEF tank controller mounted on the DEF tank. The actual cause of the intermittent serial data communication fault is under investigation but has been shown to occur typically only once.

Correction
Complete the current SI diagnostic for any trouble codes or symptoms found. If the “Service Emission System” warning andP1017 DTC are no longer active and this is the first occurrence of this condition on the vehicle the MIL can be cleared. Condition
Some customers may comment on a Service Emission System Message. This usually occurs after recently filling the DEF tank with the ignition in the on position, if:

•Using a mobile fill cart with an automatic nozzle
•Filling up at a commercial truck service station with DEF dispensing equipment
During diagnosis a technician may find DTC P206B set or stored in the history.

Note: Shortly after filling, the “Service Emission System” will clear on its own.

Cause
It has been found that some DEF fill equipment uses pumps that create a high level of temporary aeration of the DEF fluid being dispensed in the tank. This aeration of the DEF fluid could cause a temporary issue affecting the proper operation of the in-tank DEF Quality sensor. Seconds after a fill event completes the aeration dissipates and the DEF Quality sensor will return to its normal operation however if the customer has the vehicle keyed on during the fill event it is likely that this condition could occur.

Information
To reduce the likelihood of this issue occurring, the vehicle should be keyed off during filling of the DEF tank. In the event the condition is seen, the vehicle should remain keyed on until the “Service Emission System” warning clears. The P206B code in history can then be cleared. While not required some DEF filling equipment can be sold with an air/fluid separator, which can further reduce the likelihood of fluid aeration.

Condition
Some customers may comment about excessive smoke coming from the tail pipe.

The Technician may find:

•DTC P2002 set.
•Cracked or broken Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

Correction
A properly functioning diesel particulate filter should remove most if not all soot particles from the exhaust stream. The following test should not be performed immediately after a regeneration because of the reduced filtration efficiency of the DPF without any soot in it.

The purpose of this test is to aid in diagnosing a DPF that has failed internally.

Service Procedure

Object ID: 4622615Click here for detailed picture of the image.

Note: Assistance may be required to perform exhaust soot flow test.

With assistance, the engine will need to rev to Wide Open Throttle 3 consecutive times while using a cheese cloth or equivalent, over the tail pipe.

•A failed DPF has excessive soot particulates on the cheese cloth or equivalent. Refer to the graphic.
•A DPF that is working properly should show no or very minimal signs of soot particulates.
If the DPF has been found to be the cause of the heavy soot. Replace the DPF. Refer to Exhaust Particulate Filter Replacement in SI.

If the DPF has been found not to be cause of the heavy soot, refer to SI for further diagnostic testing.

there also are bulletins on parts restrictions on fuel systems, nox sensors, turbos and all other parts related to the engine, those i will not post, they are just hoops for us to jump through, there is one bulletin that I removed the engineering name and number.

and also there are some of these issues they will not have a fix for MONTHS, like block heater on the 2.8l, don't expect a fix till fall of this year at the earliest, if not fall 2018. there is a ton of codes for these engines.

No problem they just recalled 2 l5ps for incorrect pulleys. But didn't think I needed to post it

It's only 2 trucks they recalled one was stock one customer had. The idler pulleys they installed were in the wrong position or wrong one. I didn't read it because it's only 2 trucks I know I won't see one

#PIP5487: 2017 6.6L L5P Duramax Coolant Leaks - (Mar 16, 2017)

Condition
A customer may comment on a coolant leak, coolant consumption or of a low coolant message being displayed on the Driver's Information Center (DIC).

Cause
This may be due to cooling system leaks or an improper coolant fill procedure.

It may take a few engine temperature cycles (from operating temperature to cold) for the coolant level to show a lower than normal level.

Be sure to complete the current SI coolant system leak checks and verify there are no external leaks.

Reference the locations below to aid in locating external coolant leaks.

If no external leaks are found, refill the cooling system following SI procedures for filling the cooling system.

Evaluate coolant levels after a proper coolant fill is completed.

Correction
If the diagnosis has lead to external coolant leaks or a coolant loss concern check for leaks in the following areas:

Coolant leaking from coolant hoses at the Emission Reduction Fluid Injector (DEF Injector).

Please be aware of the following if there is a need to pressure test the cooling system:

Note: The radiator surge tank uses two different radiator surge tank caps. The radiator surge tank cap that vents pressure in the event of excessive cooling system pressure is located on the lower outboard side of the radiator surge tank (2). The radiator surge tank cap that is located on top of the radiator surge tank (1) is where the cooling system is filled and where pressure testing equipment is to be mounted.

Caution: The cap mounted to the top of the surge tank uses LEFT HAND threads. Turn the cap clockwise to remove the cap or counter clockwise to install the cap. Failure to turn the cap in the proper direction when installing or removing it may cause damage to the cap and/or the surge tank.

Refer to Cooling System Leak Testing (L5P) for more information.

Where is the low coolant sensor? I get a "Low Coolant" message on the DIC after parking overnight in my driveway which is about a 4 degree slope. The message clears as soon as I get back on level ground. I checked the coolant level in the white surge tank and it looks good.

#28 ·
So far I've had 3 of these happen...most notably the "Chuggle" in 3rd gear, and the low coolant level message. I'm sure over time they'll figure it all out. Thanks for the info!

#29 ·
Yup its all part of a new platform. The lml luckly didn't give me to many cool leaks or engine issues. Was mainly emissions. But the l5p will be way different and we will go through weird issues for sure
