shuttering when driving

Was driving the other day pulling a empty trailer on interstate. I felt a shutter of some sort. Then quit. When I got offf interstate. And took off from stop light it was like you had the brakes on. It pulled really hard. Did this all the way home every time I stopped and took off. When I got home would not back up. The line was flashing under the R on the dash. I shut truck off and restarted 15 min later and everything was fine. Then yesterday going down the road it shuttered and quit pulling. I let off the fuel and it started pulling again. What could this be. Bad tranny
