Possible move to Alaska, Questions

My wife and I have been talking a lot about moving out of Cali and we both really like Alaska. I would like to go to a place where we can get at least 5 acres of land and away from the city. My wife is ok with that but she doesn't want to be to far from the city so she can go to the stores easily. I am thinking about the Talkeetna area and she is saying Wasilla. We have 2 young kids and love the outdoors, hunting, fishing and off roading. Anyone have any pros & cons of these places or know any other places to check out?

I'm subbed. That's my ultimate goal. Friend from HS went to College there. She only came home once in 5 years. Now she's moved go Florida. Haha

I do know it's not going to be like going to town where you are now. Even Ankorage and Fairbanks are little towns compared to what you are used too.

I lived in Kodiak for 4 1/2 years and I have to say it was one of the greatest times of my life. What kind of work do you do? Is work a deciding factor for you? Wasilla is very popular for very good reason. You can have the best of both worlds, close enough to the city yet not to close.

The weather is a big factor there. The winters are long and cold, but the summers more than make up for it. Have you taken any trips there? Maybe try some different places on a vacation to get a feel for the area if thats an option. I think Alaska is the greatest place on earth, but thats purely subjective. Good luck with your choice, but it shouldn't be to hard since California sucks a big one.......

Wasilla is your best bet for land and nice house for a good prices. Wasilla is a decent size town has a mall and stores and everything you need give diesel groups up here as well. Facebook page is 907diesel

House Will range from 300k and up for a good place with land. Your about 40 min drive to anchorage or 20 to eagle river I would personally buy in wasilla if I didn't live on base

Sorry bud just saw this. I am in the Coast Guard, so I got stationed in Seattle. I fully intend on going back to Alaska. I'm thinking Sitka, Cordova, Ketch, or Petersberg, in no particular order. I absolutely LOVE everything about Alaska. The people, the surroundings, the remoteness, the hunting, the fishing, and most noticeably the lack of feeling like "big brother gov't" is watching.

While I couldn't live in Kodiak forever, I could definitely live there for a long time.

Thanks for the info. I still have a few things I have to get done here, but I can't wait to get out of the city and move to a place where I can walk out my front door and pee on a tree without the neighbors getting mad.
