I have never had a problem with my truck, until now. While driving yesterday, I noticed the transmission selector light that indicates which gear your in for example: PRND321 there's a small electronic light that moves to the gear selected, it's located underneath the above mentioned gears. The light went off, but the gears were still illuminated. The transmission was stuck in a middle gear and went into neutral at an intersection. I had to manually move the selector to 3 in order to move. I turned the engine off and then back on thinking maybe a computer reset would work. The selector light came back on for a few minutes and went out again, causing the same problem. Does anyone have any idea on what's going on and how to fix it?

Thanks,
Jeff

Sounds like a Neutral Safety Back-Up Switch gone bad. They are pretty easy to change from what I have read. You might still be covered under warranty though.

On the 6spds it is internal and doesnt usually cause many problems. Make sure you are pushing the lever all the way forward in park or it will not illuminate

on 5spds it is externally mounted on the drivers side behind the front driveshaft.

It is a PITA to get the connectors out. Use a heat gun to warm them up ior you will NEVER get them out. when I say heat gun I mean a little gun for heat shirnk tubing not a torch.

There is a glue on them that holds them in and the heat softens the glue. Wiggle, pull, wiggle and pull until they come. but be careful the locking tab is brittle.

Then they take some adjustment to get them to read correctly so it will tkae some time.

I guess I might be the first one to be having problems with mine (6spd)! I actually went to the trans itself and made sure it was going all the way into park and it made no difference. Is the switch hard to change? do I need to get a tranny shop to do it or is it just inside the pan?
