Hello all!
I have decided to do a 1,000 HP build on my 2002 LB7! I currently have added a K&N cold air intake and a fleece performance turbo horn along with a CAT fuel filter swap. Running all AMSOIL fluids. I need help on where to go next. Looking at doing my transmission and a lift pump next but even then I’m not 100% hell bent on those as my next step. Looking for people who know a lot more about these motors than I do. Any help is super appreciated!!!

Your talking race engine..
Pull the engine and your wallet out..
You need to build from the ground up for that horsepower..

1000hp on a 20 year old LB7?

Sincere question here. How much experience do you have wrenching? To piggy back Ottowood, you're looking at a full pullout teardown, but I dont even know if you can make 1k on that motor without spraying TBH - i could be wrong tho.

Either build it on an engine dyno and get a trans to match, or, get the trans first and build the motor to match.

I know people have done it on a stock block with a good amount of modifications. I’ve helped mod everything from a 2001 Jeep XJ to a 2013 Lexus (Don’t remember the model) but I’ve never done a diesel motor. I have a few friends in the diesel industry and a lot of people recommended this forum for stuff like this. I know I’m definitely gonna have to spray water methanol once I start really getting up there and I’m trying to stay away from nitrous as much as possible. I have the transmission figured out but I’ve never dealt with tuning or lift pumps or anything like this. Can I by the high end stuff first and change how it operates and functions as I go? What kind of internals do y’all recommend? Are there any brands y’all stick by for your parts? I don’t know much about diesel motors but I’m hungry to know more

Listen brother. Its doable on the LB7, but its a lot of coin and time. Not gonna sandbag it here. I don't forsee that motor on a 68mm getting over 600hp and I think that's even a stretch. Twin/compound at minimum. At that point, go twin charged. If youre dead set on this setup you mine as well make it YouTube worthy. Bored and resleeved, custom cut cams. Probably 300 overs. I'm a gas guy who just got in to the diesel world myself but know people who have put in some work, so hopefully I'm wrong for your sake, but from what i have read on here......

Better off with a base LML LMM to start, L5P would be an ideal base but you cant find one for under 40k right now regardless

Here’s a list i would use and is just my opinion.
calli’s crank
corillo rods
finger oval bowl pistons
factory head ported and polished (forget about aftermarket)
maton pushrods and valve train
stiffer valve springs
girdle of some sort
ARP hardware throughout
wagler high flow intake manifold
PPE exhaust manifolds and up-pipes
exergy 250% or bigger injectors
largest CP3 pump energy makes i believe 14mm (don’t need dual fueler)
A good set of compound turbos (can’t help much here)
A bunch more stuff
$$$$$$

Everyone starts wanting 1,000 hp, then reality sets in. Some make it, others don't.

Start with normal upgrades....
  • Gauges
  • Lift Pump - AirDog
  • Tranmission - Mike L @ Inglewood trans
  • EFI Live V3, find a good tuner that can support race vehicles. A v3 can let you edit tunes yourself. Ohio or Cali, this isn't as straightforward as it used to be. LB7 gives you an emissions free truck unless it's Cali, but changing timing and fuel will require emissions testing to make sure you meet family certification. This gets harder with bigger HP, hopefully SEMA / RPM act protects our right to have race vehicles.
  • From there, it's parts collection. You have to decide if you are going to dump another $40k, it better be in the bank or if you want to be realistic.
  • Compound turbo kits, injectors, engine parts, etc....
  • I would probably build an engine next, build for big HP, you had some good parts listed above.
  • I would then put it back together with those bigger injectors, turbos, etc...
  • Take truck to a tuner with a dyno so you can go through and tune it right.

So I was wanting to do the same with my lb7 and once I hot 600hp, I realized to go any further, the real money is needed. I mean, I've spent around $12k on parts alone for the 600hp, for 700hp, I need another $5000 at least for injectors and bigger cp3, then from there, you need to open up the motor and really get to work, $25k will get you most of your hard parts for 1000hp, if you are doing it yourself, thats when reality sets in and you realize one of two things, either, "okay, this is gonna take a while, I better be patient", or "holy shit, I cant afford all that" . and once you hit that 1000hp mark, you need to ALWAYS have bank ready, cuz when something goes, it isnt a slight wobble and a quick trip to the auto store. Just know what you are getting into. 600hp is fun, real fun, and my biggest worry is bending a rod, not blowing a 100psi turbine through my chest or 35000psi fuel rail to the face
