My truck will not start. If I spray ether in the breather it will start and stay running all day. Could this be my fuel pump? If so I heard there are two of them. Where are they? Sorry, real new to diesels????

id say its the glow plugs then whats the weather like where you are at?
Glow plugs do not explain why it will start when I spray ether in it but not when I prime it.. Its been doing this for a while during all types of weather.
it doesnt have to be as hot to ignite the ether as it does to ignite the diesel...how long have you been using the ether to start it?
It doesnt start after its been running a while, then you shut it off and immedeatly start it again?
no start

f it dose not start after its wormed up its not your glow plugs. i would say there's a problem with your cp3 (fuel pump) dose fuel come out the vale for the water separator on your fuel pump when you prim it with it open?

Dan
You have air
You have air
I would agree, the seal on the fuel filter could be the issue, try and give it a 1/4 turn more unless its on really tight, as you don't want to strip it.

And make sure the bleeder valve up top is on good to as well as the Water sensor on bottom is tight too.

A few weeks ago I remember someone having a similar issue where there was debris stuck in the plunger on the housing making it not keep pressure.
either way stay far far far away from ether it will ruin your max...

I disagree. These trucks will still start when its 40* outside with the glowplug system completely disconnected.

It is losing prime somewhere. This is a fuel delivery problem.

There is no electric fuel pump on these trucks; the CP3 (high pressure pump) sucks the fuel from the tank by itself....thats why any pinhole leak anywhere in the fuel line/filter/system will make it hard to start.
ya i wouldnt say it is the glow plugs either. i have started my truck with out them when its 5 below out. i would follow the fuel line from the tank all the way up to the engine and look for anysort of wetness. it doenst take much for the to leak back.
dose the truck smoke at idle when its running you may have a injector sticking and causing you to loose your prim. it is an lb7 :gearjamin
filter housing could be cracked causing it to lose prime seems to happen quite a bit on the duramax
Also there are gaskets in the fuel filter housing that will crack and dry out and it will lose prime. That happened to ours this year and we had them replaced and no more losing prime.

I have had that issue on my 02. It was injectors and very costly

I’m new to this forum but have had my 02 all these years and I can say that mine would run after using gas rag to start but would not start without it after running for several hrs. Had four injectors bad. Then a few years later wouldn’t start thought oh no not again but it would not stay running once started. It was sucking air at fittings Driver side back of motor.

Yes its the high pressure fuel pump. Had to get mine replaced last year $$$$$
I have the same problem with my 05 duramax I've replaced the cp3 pump and fuel filter housing plus fuel lines and it hasn't fixed it so I am at a lose of words but once its running it runs like a champ
Just replaced the fuel filter and did not see any damage. This is puzzling. It acts like it doesn't have pressure when I want to start it but once it gets going I am good. How can that be the fuel pump. Sounds like it is probably something simple. Finding that simple is hard.
I replaced the sending joint in the tank, the fuel filter assembly, the two hoses coming out of the fuel filter assembly, and non of that solves the same issue. Finally gave in to dealers recommendation to have injectors replaced... that did not solve the issue. The mechanic at the dealer came up with a theory that the fuel was bad... still don’t know how that could relate to the issue but he said he drained the tank and replaced old fuel with new fuel. Truck has run great ever since. My theory is they found a leak somewhere else but won’t admit it. Might be worth a try to drain and replace the fuel. Could be a simple fix. Mine did seem to be more temperamental when I got to less than 1/2 tank so maybe the contamination was more concentrated. All I know is I’ve driven my truck about 2000 miles since the fix and it has not let me down. It’s tough and expensive when you’re chasing gremlins! Good luck!
