2020 Silverado "Tailgate Open" Warning Message

All,

I have a 2020 Silverado 3500 High Country.

I was recently towing my 5th wheel, and the dashboard flashed a message "Tailgate Open" and chimed 4 times. It wasnt open. I hit the "OK" button and it went away. Over the course of a 100 mile trip, it must have went off at least 100 times. I navigated the menus and couldnt find a way to disable this warning message.

When closed, there is a decent amount of play in the tailgate. I used a T40 torx bit and tried adjusting the knobs that the tailgate latches onto to see if that would help. We just went on another 100+ mile trip and the same thing happened. So that didnt help.

It only seems to happen at highway speeds. And not only when hitting a bump - the road can be perfectly smooth and it will still go off. And it also seems to only happen when I am towing (I have hit the interstate for 25-30 miles at a time without towing and never had it go off).

Anyone had this issue? I am going to schedule a dealership appointment, but based on the circumstances, I suspect it is going to be a difficult one to diagnose.

Thanks in advance!

We are having the exact same problem. It only started when my camper dropped on the tailgate and I had to have it replaced. Called dealer and they have no clue. I have replaced one of the latches and as soon as the other one comes in I will replace it as well. The one latch did not fix it. Driving down interstate and it is going off constantly. Would love to know how to fix this.

Just a thought. Does your truck know you're pulling a 5th wheel? Do you have the 7 pin cable plugged in the inside/bed receptacle? Make sure the cable is in there tight otherwise your truck won't realize there's a trailer connected. Also, did you create a profile on the Infotainment System for your trailer? I wonder if the bumper sensors see your trailer movement and doesn't realize you're pulling a trailer and thinks the tailgate is open. Far fetched...just a thought.

Based from my experience it normally happens when the tailgate slams upon opening. I was able to prevent it from happening again after installing a tailgate assist shock. There's a good read article best tail gate assist shock where you can choose which is best for your truck. Here's the link Truck Accessories I have mine installed Deezee and had no warning message issues at all.

Does this mean we can't drive with the tailgate down? I used to do that frequently with my old truck whenever carrying lumber longer than the bed. I haven't tried it yet with my current truck.

Hello, I'm experiencing the same issue. Only when towing my 5th wheel. A local dealer said if they couldnt recreate the issue they wouldnt be able to repair it.

Since theres no way to hitch up my 5th wheel and let their tech take it out, I videoed it from my phone when it occurred.

Another dealer has looked at it. Reviewed my video, but GM still dragging their feet as to the fix. I brought up latches to the service department due to the forums. The Service manager asked if anyone would be able to provide their VIN, privately, so he could look it up and see what the fix actually was and point GM to it.

Our 2020 Silverado 3500 started the tailgate open message when closed and hauling our 5th wheel trailer but now also does so when not connected to the 5th wheel. It would do it especially on bumps and rough roads sometimes 200 times per trip. The dealer reprogrammed it and now it only does it 2 times per trip, but still does it so I can't say it is fixed. I read here about one owner who's dealer replaced both latches and both actuators and it fixed it. Told dealer about that and waiting for my dealer to get back to me.

My 2021 2500 started doing this while pulling our 5th wheel camper a few months ago. Literally flashing "Tailgate Open" on the dash every 2 seconds going down the road made me want to swerve into oncoming traffic.

Showed a video to my dealer and they are replacing the latch assemblies next week under warranty. Hopefully that fixes the issue...

On a related note...does anyone know if there is a "relearn" for these power tailgates to operate? When I started having the "Tailgate Open" alerts, I took the tailgate apart and removed one of the latch assemblies to see if there was anything a guy could adjust. When I plugged it back in I lost my power up and down function on the tailgate.

Dealer thought there was probably some relearn they could do and was confident they could fix the problem, but just wondering if anyone else had experience with this.
Thanks!

I have the same issue on my 2021 hd 2500 when towing my 5th wheel.
The fix I came up with is to attach 2 strong bungee cords to the hitch, then run over the top of the tailgate and attach the other ends to the bumper.
Try to tension them so that it pulls the tailgate towards the closed position.
Works like a charm, but I need to take it in to the dealer to see if there is a permanent fix.

I forgot to respond a couple months back, but had the dealership install new latches on my tailgate and no longer have any issues with the "Tailgate Open" warning light.

In fact, there is absolutely no play or slop in the tailgate like there used to be. I would highly recommend getting latches replaced if you are having issues. Tailgate fits tighter than it did when I bought it new.

I had the same issue and the dealer wanted me to bring in my truck. I wiped the dirt off the sensors on both sides where the latches are on the tailgate. Now the message is gone and I can raise and lower the tailgate with the button in the truck.

OMG, that did it! I've had my truck to Chevy Service twice for this false tailgate alarm. They are prepared to change out the latches and sensors. I cleaned the sensors and haven't had a false alarm since. Thanks!!!
And, the tailgate shuts tighter now. I had always thought the alarm problem was an adjustment on the latches, letting it bang around, not quite closed tight. Cleaning the sensors seemed to allow the tailgate to close much tighter.

I am going to go clean mine this week. I went from Atlanta to Savanah, and must had gone off 300 times, I was ready to pull the fuse on it... Drove me nuts!! So if this does not work for all of you that got new latches, how are they working?? Any reoccurrences after you replaced them?

Yes! We are also pulling a 5th wheel and have the same issue. Would be nice to see if there is a work around or fix.
