2022 HD Duramax Fuel mIleage

What are folks getting on the 2022 for fuel mileage. I just got a 2022 3500 srw 4x4 long box High Country. The first 900 miles I have gotten between 10.6 and 11.5 mpg. I wasn't expecting fuel economy when I ordered this truck but was expecting better. I haven't pulled yet but plan on it soon a 5th wheel trailer. I traded in a 2020 same truck and it got 18-19 in town and 12.9 towing. It got 21 first tank from the dealer. This one got 10.6 on the first check. There are no engine codes or codes I had it checked today at the dealer. Any thoughts to this. Thanks, Larry

This keeps coming up. Not really sure why. If it were my truck, I'd disconnect the negatives on both batteries and let it sit 10 minutes. Reconnect, reset your mileage on a full tank and let everything relearn.

You could have some bad trans learning or weird idle time sitting around the factory. Who knows what's going on up there sitting so long. This exact thing keeps getting posted every week or so on the new trucks in various sections.

Real world numbers on these trucks seem to be 15-18 combine from the research I have done. Much less towing heavier loads (high 9s-12ish). Others go by the dash and report high teens to low 20s. Hand calculating like most of us do here show real numbers. Coming from other brands it was a shock to me to be getting what I am but at the end of the day I love the truck. Sucks what the current administration has done to fuel prices but…

This topic does pop up pretty often. Filter your searches to look in the L5P specific sub-forums to help.

I'm part way through my 4th tank of fuel. The best I got (favorable winds) was 18 on the highway with a typical speed of 72 mph. I towed a travel trailer into a 25 mph headwind and got less than 8 by the computer; on the return trip the tank averaged out to almost 10. I was definitely disappointed with that result.

On the 2 tanks I have hand calculated the trip computer was slightly pessimistic, about 3%. I've never had that happen before.

This is on a stock 3500 drw.

15-17 city, 20-26 highway, 9-13 towing, 21 ccsb High Country just passed 10k miles,
Worth noting are you using the 25, 50 or 400 mile info to display. Ski
you mean you can change it?? lol, guess i will learn something else today

What exactly does this mean and how do you change the display. Another post suggested disconnecting the ground cables to both batteries for 10 minutes. What will this accomplish. Thanks, Larry

Disconnecting the batteries can sometimes reset any hiccups in the system that can cause weird behaviors. It's probably not your issue, but it is worth trying since it's free.

You also just need to get some more miles on it before you really look hard at the fuel economy. Your original post said you have 900 miles on the truck, so the transmission is still learning. Give it a couple thousand miles to settle in a little bit.

You should average 15 to 17 combined, unloaded.

My 22 CC Long bed SRW 4x4 is averaging 16.3 so far for all miles driven. I have driven it just over 1500 miles.
I have seen a best on the highway of 26.5 but my highway average is more like 21-22. Its worth noting that I usually only do 65mph. I prefer to run a little slower than the flow of traffic so I typically run 5 under the posted limit of 70.
I have towed my car trailer both loaded an empty about 180 miles of that 1500 so far. I have not yet towed my 5thwheel but will in 2 weeks.
Around town I see about 12-14mpg.
I drive for MPG about 90% of the time.
Though I did do several 0-70mph pulls at full throttle after the 500 mile break in as I wanted to see what the truck had, and I showed a few people as well as I was impressed with how fast this big heavy brick is.
I suspect with towing and such my average will drop below the 16.3 its at now.

So far I am rather impressed with the MPG from this thing.
But I never let it idle, I coast up to stop signs and lights, I don't speed, I take my time getting up to speed, and I use my cruise control as much as I can. Honestly I drive like and old man. LOL

My truck is stock right now, other than tire pressures. I had the dealer alter the TPMS system so I could run 52psi in the my front tires and 45 in my rears without the system going nuts. It not only rides a lot better empty like this, but my tires tend to last a lot longer as well. On my last one I got 60k out of tires rated for 50k.

I have found that most of the time bag MPG is caused by the driver not the truck.
My old truck was a gas 2020 2500 and I could average around 14mpg in normal driving with it not towing.
My wife on the other hand would struggle to get 10mpg average in normal driving.
Same goes for her Grand Cherokee. She gets about 11mpg average and I do around 16mpg average with it. ItsV8 4x4 Limited so its not the most fuel efficient thing. LOL But she loves it, and its a beast in the snow.

I'm getting 16 - 20 mpg mixed (a lot more freeway than city and excluding DPF regens which go down to 11 - 12 mpg) and 9 -13 towing our trailer. Averaging about 17 - 18 mpg (hand calculated). DIC mileage tends to be pessimistic as does the mpg on the trip odometer by about 1 - 1.5 mpg generally. DEF is running about 850 to 1000 mpg. I just crossed 12,000 miles with my 2022.

Just got back from my first big trip with 2021 2500 hd 4x4 custom. Pulled approx 12k 5th wheel out to Utah and back from Iowa. 4300 miles, 11.4 mpg overall. Guessing 500 mi driving around but rest was towing. Usually 70 mph on freeway, 60 mph on 2 lanes. Really performed well. Plenty of power in the mountains.

So I just filled my truck up today and hand calculated the MPG.
I put in 14.362 gallons after driving 281 miles. So that gives me 19.565MPG for the last 281 miles. That was about 60% highway, 20% back roads, and 20% city.
No regen in there.
But still I am very happy with that!

The trip counter showed 281 miles and 17.2mpg So at least the trip computer is a bit pessimistic.

Nice! That's about what I'm seeing. Trip counter is really pessimistic in your case (2.5 mpg low in your case).

My 2022 2500HD is now getting 18-21 mpg highway at 75 mph and 14-17 driving around town. Depends on how much time I spend idling. Stuck in traffic I get around 12 mpg. Towing my trailer, I'm getting 11-14 mpg calculated. I have 14,600 miles on my truck currently. We'll be taking a long trip through NM, AZ, UT & CO in September, so we'll see how it does then.

I think it might be properly broken in since this is slightly better than previously reported at 12,000 miles.

Update 12/17/2022 - We took the trip right when the truck rolled 16,000 miles. Towing we got 12 to 15 mpg and the truck performed very well! Not towing we were averaging 18 to 21 mpg. The best we got was going into North Rim Grand Canyon using cruise control and driving 45 - 50 mph: 32 -36 mpg calculated. That was a bit anomalous. The truck calculated mpg was within 0.1 mpg of the hand calculated mpg. Total trip was about 3600 miles filled DEF twice: at Fruita CO and upon arriving home for about 600 - 700 mpg DEF, which isn't bad at all. The truck loved pulling that trailer.

I jus got back from a 3800 mile trip pulling my 11500 5th wheel. The truck showed 10.7 on the indicator and the math showed 12.1 My 2020 I had used to get 12.9 pulling same trailer. The daily mileage around town is 13.2 where my 20 was 19-20 mpg. I'm being told it is from a regen recall done on them that retards the timing which causes the drop in mileage to satisfy epa. The truck functioned great other than mileage.

I can't wait to see this topic once the 23MY comes out with the increase in horse power and torque.:devilish:o_O

I log my fuel usage on my fuely app so these numbers are completely hand calculated.

3600+ miles on the truck so far. First 2500 were no trailer or light trailer usage (under 5k), last 1k was mostly towing our 5th wheel which is 10k ish loaded up, haven't scaled it.

Avg MPG Life - 14.1

Best Tank - 19.5 - this was east bound 72mph I24 headed to Franklin, NC with a 20' trailer and slingshot on the trailer, oddly on the way back with the empty trailer got 18.5mpg

Last tank - 10.1 mpg - pulling fifth wheel 72mph on a camping trip from southern indiana to Carlye IL. There was a little driving while at the campground, had a 1/8th tank left when we arrived back home, 2 hour drive each way.

like everyone else I bought the truck to pull, wish it got 45-55mpg like our kia but it own't pull anything

Our old truck was a 2007 dodge cummins and we would saw similar mileage with it towing the same trailer. I'm happy. I'll be happier if we can get a guy in office that can do the impossible like make us energy independent with lower energy prices. Oh wait, we had that guy, guess we know it is possible

I am puzzled, my 2015 3500 was getting 11.5 average with my trailer driving my normal speed, 78ish but this 2022 is 8-9. Horrific. I'm so disappointed. Likewise, no trailer I flirted with 20mpg and again now 13.5. 5500 miles at the moment and hoping it loosens up a bit because this is killing me.

I had a 2020 and the fuel mileage increased after 5k to 20+ highway 12ish towing, hoping that my 2022 does the same! Currently has 3,700 miles on her.

Yes I totally understand. I just bought a 2022 GMC Denali Dually long bed and I expected a lot better mileage. I was totally shocked when I getting 12.0- 13.0 empty and getting only 8.0 pulling my 40Ft. fifth wheel camper doing only 70mph. Does anyone know what I can do to my truck to get better mileage ? This is ridicules.

I still can't wait to see the mpg conversations with the next generation of trucks pushing more horse and more torque.
