4x4 Conversion

Moving to CO in two years and as a project i wanna convert to my 01 2500HD to 4x4. I searched and could not find anything on here. I know it would be easier to just buy a 4x4 but I like working on stuff and am a good mechanic in my opinion. Plus I dont wanna buy all the mods for a different engine because if i buy a 4x4 it wont be an LB7. I have built jeeps but those are simple mechanical 4x4 systems. I am wondering what the differences b/w the 2 and 4 wheel drive systems are. Is there a different computer. I know a lot of vehicles have universal wiring harnesses and just dont use parts. Is it the same with the 4x4 switch in the 2500HD's. Also is the allison the same in the 4x4 and 2x4 trucks? Thanks fellas for the advice

sounds like a big project. I don't have the answers you are looking for, but if you are going to spend all the money to do the conversion....go with a solid front axle conversion. It will probably be easier than trying to get the IFS set-up. I don't think there is a difference in the allison between a 2 and 4wd vehicle....just the transfer case and I would think the drive shaft would be different (shorter).
Mavdog its not really that hard to do what you want to do as long as you have all the parts. Its just mostly a bolt on change over! Try giving Kyle a call at Crank It up Diesel. They're super street 4x4 puller started its life as a 2x4:D

Hope this helps!

You will need a different tail section for the transmission to bolt the transfer case to also. Not a huge deal, just another bolt on item.
yea i figured both driveshafts a transfer case and the servo that engages the 4wd and 4wd lo. The switch panel inside the truck and the adaptor b/w transfer case and allison. I think the IFS axle out of another junkyard truck would be easier than making the mods for the straight axle. I am not looking for a rock crawler i just want a way to get around in the snow!! I think the biggest part I am worried about is the electronics. I will give those fellas a call maybe they can help me with that part of the process! Thank you guys
