Fresh air side is atmospheric, so could just be the dirt in your area or smoke possibly. As long as the engine side is still clean, I wouldnt lose sleep over it though.
Air Filter soot

I've been lurking here for a while and found very helpful information, thanks.
I checked my air filter yesterday, and found what looks like soot on the 'fresh air' side of the filter (see pic). The filter has 9000 miles on it. My LLY is bone stock. I've searched here and there, can't find any mention of this happening. The engine/intake tube side of this filter is perfectly clean. Any ideas?
