:thumbSo, I get on here frequently and always am envious of these personal threads that everybody makes. Build threads for the most part. Now I don't take that many pictures for a detailed build thread so that's why its not a specific build thread but more of a history and where am I now thread. Mainly for me to keep up with my truck, but will be adding modifications as I go and taking more pictures. ( I promise!)

Here's my LBZ as she sits now.

Here's a directory of modifications, repairs, or general bs to date on the truck and the links to the post :thumb

Haven't been on here in a while. Was just thinking this today how I should check up on here. Well now I have an actual reason.

Today after leaving a fireworks stand I got on it to get in front of traffic and as soon as I started putting power down I heard a bunch of clicking, almost like a ratchet strap or chatter type noise like a stun gun or rocks sliding across my bed. I pulled off thinking that is was the rocks but found only small ones back there. Pulled back out with an empty bed and sure enough the noise is still there. It is definitely in the drivetrain in the rear. Went away as soon as I let off the power, and under normal acceleration it is not there. The u joints are not new but they have both been replaced within the last couple years if not 1 year. I changed the fluid in the rear diff a while ago as well and found a couple of needle bearings it looked like. I put a picture up in the thread awhile ago. Here it is....

I was thinking it's gotta be the locker that's toast now. But after reading and thinking more, I guess it could be a ujoint. But I did just check them both and Greased them both yesterday and no play. Still one could be seized up I guess. I know practically nothing about the rear diff g80 either. What do yall think?

Bump. After reading more it seems some people say the g80 is junk and others say it's great. Anybody got any info on this? Today I'm gonna try a pull from a dig and see if it'll make noise because so far I've only heard it when turning and applying power. I know I did this to myself, I love to powerslide and do it often. Hell I used to do it everyday leaving my last job since it was so easy to do.

G80 or as they are commonly referred to "the gov bom" are fuckin junk. You can put the rear end from a dodge in there or various others. I'd go grizzly locker if you can afford it and that is in fact the culprit

I need to diagnose it more, but I have never removed a rear diff cover, let alone swapped over anything in it. I could probably figure it out but don't wanna fudge up the tolerances and really cause an issue. I'm thinking about taking it to a diff guy to see what can be done. I'd rather stick with something stock or similar to stock for road manners as I daily drive it throughout the year. But would want hopefully a stronger replacement.

Do you have a grizzly?

#466 ·
I don't but I know 56taskforce...grant. he has one in his. Grizzly makes a better version of the G80...does the same thing but supposed to be alot more reliable

I thought the Grizzly was just a straight up locker. That is doesn't have an open rear end a
or whatever it's called and is always locked.

#468 ·
So did another test and can still hear it when going straight as well. I'm thinking it's in the diff but I'm gonna drop the Driveshaft tomorrow and see if the U-Joints are free or seized up. I been reading a lot about other options for the rear end and it seems there's always a negative with the other lockers or replacements. I never had an issue with the g80 in my truck. I liked it. I hardly ever had a 1 Tire fire either. I think I know what made it start making noise. I was leaving a gravel lot and got on it hard and got the rear end out, and transitioned to concrete. I didn't instantly have traction, I was still sideways spinning the tires though, but that's the last time I know of that I really was hard on the locker and I never heard a noise before that. But I also didn't hear the noise immediately following that either. It had been a couple weeks. I'm not sure. If there is damage to the locker or Rear diff I will probably just replace the g80 with another or repair my stock one since I hear they are very strong if your not stupid with them. Which I have been, always powersliding wet or dry.

Yesterday I went out and tested the rear end locker to see if it is still functional. I put 1 Tire in the grass and another on the street and brake torqued it. Only one Tire spun and it was the one in the grass. I figure it was because I was on the brakes. So I went down the road and put the other side tire in the dirt, Brake torqued a little and both Tires spun. Pulled away and left with both spinning. Brake torqued again and same thing. Rear end locked, but this time I was harder though and heard the noise again but it still locked up. So I put the right wheel in the dirt and still locked up. Whatever I did it would lock up. But if I turned sharp it didn't act like it was stuck locked up. No dragging or tire noises. I couldn't find a spot where I could sorta get stuck though. So driving home I got on it pretty hard around 40 probably and thought I could hear it again too, and if that's the case, it shouldn't be the locker then I wouldn't think because it's not supposed to work at that speed. I'm not sure though, gonna order some ujoints and try that first and then go from there I think.

Could always pull the rear axles and see if your wheel bearing(s) are starting to go out. Look behind the rear tire with a bright flashlight and see if there is any sign of oil starting to seep between the brakes and dust shield. Otherwise I'd open the rear diff cover and inspect closely

I have checked the rear bearings the way you check front wheel bearings and they both have very very slight play, but I'll look for seepage as well. Wouldn't that cause a brake issue?

#473 ·
Is a little play normal in the rear wheel bearings? I thought it was.

#475 ·
I'm gonna order some spicer u joints and throw them in and see what happens from there. It wouldn't hurt. The ones I have in now are precision great able joints I believe. And I've had the for 40k to 50k so they are probably due.

#477 ·
Yeah went ahead and ordered 2 spicer u joints. 1410 series. Should be here tomorrow or Thursday. Gonna get a ball joint press before I do em. I hope my hunch is right. Otherwise it'll be quite expensive.

#478 ·
Forgot to post my fix. Ended up being a bad ujoint making all the noise in the rear. No more clicking, I still have the him type whine sorta noise bit screw it. Everything is working like it should. I threw in a couple Spicer U-Joints to replace my old napa greasable joints. Everything went smooth and no hiccups there.

Also if anybody is interested and around St.Louis, me and another member have a meet/Cruise this Saturday at 11. Gonna start in Alton at the Piasa Cave and cruise up through Grafton. Gonna take pictures and videos. A great time to meet other owners and people who have the same interests as you. Make some friends maybe even.

Congrats on the little one! That fm transmitter that you have. Does it work on the stock stereo? If so, how's it been treating you? Thanks.
